The real boardwalk

Anyone remember when it was a real boardwalk. The river was much closer when I was a boy back in the thirties. The Pav was the place to be during the war watching the navy guys chase the zoot suits while eating a melorol. There was a great ladies softball league playing at woodland park and thes gals could really play.

I went to school at Woodland and Verdun High. My best buddy was Derik Wyles. We played a lot of hockey at woodland park. I am 73 so this would have been in the thirties and forties. My sister still lives in Verdun on Willibroad.

I remember the great football games that were played at Cement  Downs (woodland Park). Some of the teams that come to mind are Verdun Mustangs and Newyork Fashions. Good quarterback was Bobby Pugh. Best drop kicker for converts was Eddy Macleod.

I have memories of the boardwalk from 1951 on, when we arrived from England. There was no landfill past the railings, the banks just went quite steeply down to the water ......... there was no Seaway on the south Shore, ...... the nuns still lived on the Island ........ you could still walk across the ice to the island in winter on a track outlined by pine trees - out past the trees was dangerous because that was where they cut the the blocks for the iceboxes and the ice was thin in places......... you could go by boat to the far side of the island, have a picnic, be visited by the nun's cows and swim in the river ........ I remember the ladies softball team as well - didn't the McGlashan sisters play? ........ there were concerts and an amateur show at the bandshell in Woodland Park ......... the Canadiens practiced at the Auditorium ....... more will come to me I am sure!  Just recently there was an article in the Gazette about the cross from the convent being returned to the Island.

The Boardwalk was built as a barrier to keep the river out of Verdun. Steve
