Phewwwww

Just read this in the Montreal Gazette:

Ottawa city politicians will begin debate this week on a program to get people to stop using perfume, scented soaps, cleaners and deodorants - and possibly ban them altogether in public places.

Maybe a good investment would be clothespegs (for our noses).  What will Big Brother think of next?

Hi Mom'45,    There are signs like that in the Hospital here,...that read "Share the Air" and because of all the different colognes & perfumes,.and deoderants & soaps,...they mention the possible alergies to some people ,I guess that is plausible,.and understandable in a Hospital Enviroment,......but I wonder if that is the start to all public buildings,.....it does get rather much after a while though,....... but on the same note ,.they have signs just outside the door (right outside) asking people (mostly patients) not to smoke to close to the doorway,.....I always find it funny to see People (sick people,.....some really sick),....outside having a smoke I know it is a tough habit for people to break,...but if your already sick,......might be a good time to 'try ' & quit or slow down..............hahahahahah sitting outside even in the Winter some attachded to IV' and dragging the pole on wheels around with them...............Just seems odd............. .............but to each their own I suppose:        HF&RV

At the gym I have been gassed on occasion by little Miss Perfects in
their petite designer outfits, in full make up mind you, and doused
with perfume. Probably a really good perfume, but hey, when your
trying to catch your breath and you happen to inhale the miasma
emanating off these lovelies it's all bad. Cough!!
I enjoy the wiggly stuff in the gym as any other guy would, but divas
please, you're there to sweat dear.
Also one or two guys loved to poor on the cologne in the locker room
after their shower -- also deadly.
I never mention anything b/c it seldom happens, and It's usually
newcomers. They learn soon enough.

I agree with both you of you...and I also have put up with obnoxious smells of perfume, cologne and stale smoke, but I was wondering more if eventually the people like the plumber, tv repair man (?), carpet installer, etc. will play a role in the government eventually banning "smells" like soap, deodorant, etc. from use inside your home as these tradespeople have to enter your house to work, and goodness knows, they may have an objection or allergy to your "smells".   In public, I agree with trying the ban, but I wonder just how far this scenario can go before the peasants revolt?

My husband has allergies, one being cigarette smoke, or more likey a chemical in the smoke. I can't wear perfume , cologne or hair spary, he just gets filled up and can't stop wheezing and sneeszing if I do. I use as many unscented products as possible, such as deodorant, laundry detergent etc. I think people have to use moderation. We have a wood stove which we hardly use because of his allergies and in the winter when the neighbours around us have a wood fire going he has an attack if he's ouside and it usually depends on wheher there is a low ceiling...not sure if that's the right terminology...so I can sympathize with people who have severe allergies. People should use a little commom sense and moderation perhaps it wouldn't be so bad for the sufferers.....Dianne

Quebec has made it illegal to smoke in any public building including bars restaurants etc. Today was the first day. The restaurants were empty, but not from loss of trade. Smokers were eating and leaving right away. Interesting. Smoking is still allowed in private homes and probably the red light district. Like the 90 year old man said when they asked him, "Do you smoke after sex?" He said, "Depends how fast I go"

Maybe it is actually better for Restauranteers as their clients leave and there is a table for the next hungry customer sooner. No more sitting around smoking and having that second (free?) cup of coffee.

It has been against the law here in BC to smoke in most Public Buildings for quite sometime,.....as for Public buildings they too have come around as well,...... I Remember visiting Montreal several years ago ,.and I went up to the big shopping centre on Newman Blvd (Caravelle something???),......and I was going to put some film in to be developed ,..and when I walked in I was very surprised at People actually smoking in a shopping center,....not because I'm against smoking ,...but because I hadn't seen that for quite awhile here in Victoria,......it amazed me that smoking was still allowed in a mall like that,........So I guess I'm saying that ,everyone (including smokers, and those who feel civil liberties are at stake)  will get used to places being non-smoking,.......Things do Pass(and we get over & then used to the idea),......and if Governments are willing to pass laws on nonsmoking ,....Then the Question begs to be asked ,.....Just how bad is smoking for me.......I would guess it must be really bad if 'foregoing the tax intake' is deemed better than allowing the old status quo: (Just an opinion).................and I would guess that most smokers ,readily go outside ,when visiting the homes of friends,........So I guess ( as Bob Dylan said ) "The Times they are a Changing"   ..............................................................................havefunand rememberVerdun

I must respond to this post....as I am party to the "no using colgne, perfume lifestyle at work.  We have been told....and I am in Human Resourses..(my first day working there I was told I could no longer use the scented soap I was using!)..that no one can use any extra stuff while working, ie perfume, colgne etc...nothing sented!  We cannot use a cleaner with areosol....we have to use a spray bottle with contents that will not disturb any allergies!    So we are a "non" smelling company due to the above problems....And we have had this in effect for several years....prior to this world wide band! Chris

Sorry Mom 1945, but I think you are taking this extreme to well "overboard" These people that go into peoples houses have to take the good with the bad...that is what they are paid for....doing a job!  Don't start saying because I use "dial" and the trades person is allerget to it...to stop him completing his job....sometimes it is a risk....not like a stationary office.....very different!  A stationary office can whine and yell about things, but the trades people....well then they would be without work wouldn't they(they do not have the power to stop what happenes in homes that they encounter!) if they couldnl"t work because of whatever?  Quite frankly they do not have a choice in the matter, and if they do....well they lose the job!  In my eyes, if you want to be a freewheeler, then you have to pay the consequences....or loose the job...cause you can't handle the "soap"

HI Les, just read your post....and well I am impressed with you being a (non smoker) that you would .....almost defend the smokers.....me being a smoker, and having to conform to the BC laws of where I can and cannot smoke....and trust me on this I have had many of arguements on top of Grouse Grind......after I have completed this journey in record time to the idiot who is cursing me for smoking!  Sorry, maybe only Les will know about this climb, or maybe heard about it....never the less, I have completed this climb several times in a week, yet I still get conflict from some people....I must admit, not all, but there are the few who think they rule the earth!  I have had numourous arguments with theses well wishers!  But my arguement, with these protesters is always....what was your time?  My time....has been always way better then theirs....and this has closed their chops!  Dumb asses!  They have never had anything to argue, once they have heard my time is better then theirs!  So you non smokers...how do I handle this? chickentaco2000 MSN said...

Hey Maggie, I think you are NOT correct in saying that the resauranter would be better off if the smoker just left the building.....or basicallyt that was your intent....I think you are very wrong in saying this....stats say that a smoker will stay there longer and order more then the non smoker will!  think about it!   But with now....like here in BC....the average person leaves the eatery faster...but with no better tip for the server....then a non smoker.....think about it for the server....and ask them....would they rather service the smoking pit then the non smoking pit?  do they get better tips?  Ask them!   Chris

It matters not whether you're a smoker or non-smoker.  The law says......ye shalt not smoke in public places.   -  Same as speeders, doesn't matter if all other cars on the road are speeding, if you get caught you'll get a ticket, because the law says....ye shalt not speed.   -  Same as not wearing a seat belt, if you get caught not wearing one, you shall get a ticket, because the law says....ye shalt wear a seat belt.   Chacun a son gout, but just don't do it if its agin the law!  Now, if we don't like the laws we can protest to try and get them changed, but good luck trying.   By the way, am I a smoker, or not?

Hey Les, glad you like my "name".....I find it curious to say the least!   As for the crap that is going around about scents....well....I can understand it in a cramped office, but as for individual homes....take a pill!  People who visit homes on a regular basis must get used to things....as there is no protocol as to how a family has to show it's self....and that must never change!  We would lose our freedom if that were the case! Stop the e-mails about how things should be in private homes!  That is truly not fair!   At the workplace....certainly a different story.....   Anyone still having a problem with this issue should contact me directly!  Not this website! I am a smoker, have been most of my life. I believe I have the right to make that choice for myself and nobody should feel they have the right to take that choice from me. At the same time I never smoke in my house, I smoke in the garage during inclement weather. I live with non smokers and I believe I don’t have the right to expose them to something that is hazardous to their health. And being honest, it's a dirty habit, with odours, ashes, and butts. There's nothing more disgusting than areas outside buildings where smokers gather to smoke and see the pile of butts left over time. I myself would think nothing of being forward with someone who lit up at the table while I was eating. What the purpose of the smoking laws is to protect non smokers from the hazards of cigarette smoke. And even though I am a smoker I am very much in support of these laws.

Chris I know where you are coming from, and I'm glad you know where I'm coming from......so on a hot topic like this we are on opposite sides of the fence   I watched helplessly as my mother died from throat cancer and she smoked for 60 years...not a pretty sight....She was 75. Only 15 years older than I am now and believe me in 15 years time I do not want to leave this earth as I have way too much to do. She told me she had some regrets and one was not seeing her grandchildren marry and make her a great grandmother......I accompanied my mother for 6 weeks as she went to the Montreal General for radiation treatments in 1996 and that was so difficult...you have no idea...seeing all those people deteriorate, granted not all had cancer because they were smokers. After the surgery to remove the larynx she could no longer speak and she could not eat or drink. She refused a feeding tube directly into the stomach. This is very graphic but I feel I have to tell it....she would try to eat a liquid diet and she would swallow but the food would regurgitate from her nose....She went from about 130 down to about 60lbs in a very short time and we the family finally insisted she have a feeding tube. As I said I was with my mother most of that year, I do not live in Montral, so I travelled back and forth staying weeks at a time which caused friction here at home....then I had my daughters still at home and of course my husband and they were very supportive but at times I felt torn between the two...normal reaction... People say that what they do and how they live their lives is their business and yes I do agree with that to a point, but when someone gets seriously ill everyone suffers from the effects. I had been in the habit of calling my mom every other week to chat, have a few laughs and catch up on the news. It was very difficult for me loosing that connection with my mother....here she was still living but communication was cut off because she couldn't speak....it was as if she was already dead......but she was still living....   Well enough of this as I am getting myself sad and I want to be happy!!   Don't Worry Be Happy!!!

Chicken taco2000. I agree if you want to smoke it is your business. But one sort of attitude you don't want to take, is the one you are taking. And that is that you smoke and you are healthier, and faster, and quicker, and" nothing is going to happen to me if I smoke". I would make a recommendation that if you have a printer, that you print out all the resposes you have made about beating everyone up "THE MOUNTAIN". Take those comments that you print out, and from time to time over the next several years or so, take them out and read them. Hopefully, and I truely means this.....hopefully years down the road you won't be saying, those people on Verdun Connections were right, and that you can prove the people on VC wrong. I can see the anger in your messages, and that is fine, if you want to be angry with those people you are beating up "THE MOUNTAIN". But I think sharing your anger
here, over and over again, just does one thing. It shows you are an angry, angry person, and that is all. Winston Allison

One thing I think is wonderful, is for the ladies on here who have given birth to children, and the mom and dads who have put forth an effort to raise and provide for their kids. Smokers and non-smokers can do that. Everything we do we need to put in perspective. As long as we can say we did the best we could at the end of our lifes, then what more can we ask. course our favorite Rodney King saying; "Can't we all get along". Hope we all have a good weekend. Lots of love!!!!!! Winston
