Bovril was originally called "Johnston's fluid beef", by its creator, John Lawson Johnston. An early advert for his product showed an ox staring at a bottle of Bovril with the caption "alas, my poor brother".
I do know that Rocket Richard made a commercial for Bovril. His spoken line was; "Bovril helps me to score." Winston Allison
Winston; was the Rocket referring to his scoring on or off the ice? He must have consumed a lot of Bovril the night he scored five goals against the Maple Leafs, or that is something that I had heard he had done. m.p.u.
Winnie.....The Rocket also said..."Bovril backs me up & helps me score too" and to think I never watched hockey!! cookie

There used to be a sign on top of the building at either guy and St.Cath. or Peel. It showed a picture of a cow saying "Alas my poor brother, Bovril" It showed tears running down the cows face which were created by a series of lights. Familiar now? Ed
Chris, I remember a similar commercial with the Rocket, but he said something similar to this: "......when I get a real bad 'eadache, that really 'urts"........Yes, and likewise, I have never 'eard anoder won 'eider. hehehe Cheers

Hi Mom, That commercial was for the headache pill, "Instantine", and it was Jaques Laperriere, defenceman for the canadiens. "Hinstantine for da edache dat really urts. We still laugh at that one. Mike

My memory is of him saying, "I go for Bovril any time. " My first sports hero, '52 or '53.
