Hi Kathy,   Welcome to the site.  I graduated from VCH in 64.  What year did you go?  I remember Sunday drives to Hemmingford.  Do they still have African Safari?  And I loved the apple orchards.  I miss the smell of cider and apples  in the fall and the trees forming a canopy as we drove to the orchards to pick apples and buy cider....what a sight!   Dolly

Hello katkal2,.......I had a car of mine stored in a friends barn ,.....directly across the street from Parc Safari African........that was my winter storage spot for my old BigBlock Beaumont,......which drew more than it's share of attention from the local gendarme,...in Lasalle at that time.............Fun Stuff...........  the Barn where it was stored was owned by a friend of my oldmans,......and my employer at the time.   a Mr Bob Dibblee (not to sure of that spelling),..........but I kept my old car in that barn for a couple of years (winter time of course)...........Bob owned a few companies in Montreal ,....and I worked for two of them,........I also worked on the refurbishing of his old Farm House (the one across the street from the Parc Safari),...........He was the last employer (other than working for my oldmans company) when I left LaBelle Province for good...................neat old memories you 've  prompted from my old memory banks ,......Thanks for forcing me to make a 'withdrawal' from the old bank..............hahahahhah              (...........and I still own the whole power train from my Crazy Beaumont...........also wasn't far from Napierrville ,where the car got exercised often)............hahahahha

Hi Kathy, I have two Hemmingford memories. One, my grandfather had a friend who had an apple orchard farm in Hemmingford. I think his name was Harold Palmer. I went there with my grandfather one time. It was a beautiful area, Mr Palmer's daughters went to school in the US. They had permits to cross into the US on a dirt road that ran by the farm. Hemmingford & Clinton Counties had an arrangement on schools. In some areas American kids went to Canadian schools & in other sections Canadian kids went to US schools. The second memory was in 1963. The Canadian Railroad Historical Association ran a special Fall Season chartered Canadian National Railroad passenger train from Montreal to Hemmingford. It was a really nice ride & not too expensive. The tracks stopped at the United States Border but we were told that the train at one time continued on to Lake Placid & then on to Utica, New York. I think I read that the Canadian National Railroad stopped freight service to Hemmingford some years ago & removed the tracks. I hope I'm wrong & that the tracks are still there.

Hi Kathy,   Yes, the Petch name sounds familiar.  I think that's where we went.  Do you know Maurice King and Janet Hicks?  They lived in that area.  He founded the Equality Party I believe in 1989 and is publisher of Dialogue.  Janet is the editor.  They both live in BC now.  I had a column for 10 years in Dialogue...call it my apprenticeship in writing.   Thanks also for the info re the Esquire and Edgewater.  Does anyone remember the El Morocco on Ste. Catherine in the late fifties?   Dolly

the names that were mentioned are not familiar...Unfortunately the train tracks are gone...and there are too many old barns to pinpoint which one was refered to...Hemmingford is full of apples and barns lol...Oh and carrots lol always driving over carrots on way to work..Im in bunny heaven...I work at the Duty Free in Lacolle...A short 10 minute drive its great...Except last night when I couldnt tell if I was on the road due to the heavy fog...was asking myself on way home from work at 11pm why I liked the country so much.

Hello Kathy, I'm gonna throw another name at you. My grandmother, Bessie (McNaughton) (Lummis) Main lived in Hemmingfors as well after she retired from teaching. They lived in an old farmhouse that the local Indians had helped build many years before. I still remember the old outhouse with five "seats" all at different heights. When the one room schoolhouse in Hemmingford was slated for demolition, grandma had it moved to her property to preserve it. In later years, grandma had a smaller house built on a small piece of land on the property and she sold the main house and most of the land. Grandma stayed in that house until the late 80's. She drove the snowplow in the winter as well. The new owners of the "main" house restored it and were kind enough to let us tour it when we were there in "88. That was also the last time I saw my grandma. Thanks for the memories.
