KOSTAS CATHEDRAL REMEMBER

WHAT A GRET SPOT! NEXT TO THE DOMINION STORE AND BELOW VERDUN TEUTORIAL COLLEGE.
EVEN MY MOM AND HER FRIENDS MRS. MARY PIGEON, MRS. JEAN WHALEN LOVED IT.
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY IT WAS CALLED KOSTAS CATHEDRAL?
FIGURE WHERE THE MONEY FOR CHURCH WENT.
WELL THAT WAS THEN AND THOSE MOMENTS OF FREEZINF=G TOES, FACES AND BUTTS WERE WARMED BY TIMES AT KOSTAS.
REMEMBER POP AT BROWN RINK? NICEST GUY.
WELL I AM 63 NOW AND STILL KAYAKING IN THE INTERCOASTAL HERE IN FL.
WALKING THE BEACH WITH NEW FRIENDS AND ENJOYING THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE, I FREQUENT THE ISLAND IN BAHAMAS AS MY SECOND SET OF ROOTS IS THERE,
JUST LOVE THE TOURQUISE WATERS.
AND NATIVE PEOPLE.

Hi there, I was reading your message and noticed you mentioned Mary Pigeon and Jean Whalen.  They were also friends of my grandmother (who lived next to Jean) - Rosemary Shorrock, and my mother, Jacqueline Heaney.  Did you know them? My mother would have been 58 (she passed away 9 yrs ago). I also loved Kostas (my first date was there) and grew up skating and playing at Brown Park. Now I live in North Carolina. Are you talking about Kostas restaurant on Bannantyne near brown Blvd. I remember when it first opened and we all thought we were so cool hanging around there.  I also remember Pop at the rink.  I lived on Manning near Bannantyne and hung around Proudfoot's store and Currie's grocery store on the corner, next to the old St Thomas More chapel - now long gone Frank Leigh

Hi Frank......What year did Kostas open?? I started hangin' around their in 1955-56 when the one and only waitress was always called "MAW" she looked elderly to me then had glasses and was great to us teens. Cherry cokes, fries with gravy, and those hamburgers were sooo good . Also Curries was a favorite of my brothers. He would phone up for a case of beer during his Navy Years, and they knew his voice and address automatically. Altho' I didn't think it was called Curries,is this the meat store at the corner of bannantyne and the street before Riverview? Not sure......as we lived on 3rd ave prior to Allard ave and we also shopped at Curries on Verdun ave and 3rd??   cookie

Hey everybody great group.  This is my 1st post.  I lived on Godin in the 60's.  The meat store on Riverview and Bannantyne was Campeau's.  Went there very often for "a half pound of baloney and 6 slices of cooked ham" for my dad!

i remember mr.AND mrs. campeau very well, i lived on bannan.& valiq. they were the nicest people, i knew them for years, like 40. and lussiers grocery store corn. of rolland and bann. great fresh meat, and filet of sole. not farmed. farmed fish is the worst deficient fish you can eat. fish must feed on other fish. gynetically modified anything has little food value. but free from mercury. not hormones.order your fish from a great site  great alaska seafood from cape spencer, the site is great. and we order from florida over nite.the best of the best. 4 kinds of salmon, 300 pound halibut, dream on and check it out. carolyn.

Great memories of Kosta's for sure.... I hung out there with Cookie(Sam), her brother Wayne, Heather Milligan, Mary Fisher, Barb Squires, Gary Allen, "Pony" Piche, Irene Piche.  We hung around either outside or inside for hours every night and Kosta or MAW never shooed us away....they were pretty cool. Kosta's Kathedral - in a previous message, I told the story of Heather & I going there on Sunday mornings on the way to Mass and sending our younger brother and sister to church to pick up the bulletin 'to prove' that WE had gone to church.  In the meantime, Heather and I sat there drinking cherry cokes and smoking(we thought we were s-o-o cool back then...lol)....so I guess our 'collection money for church' was donated(?) to Kosta's Kathedral. I think Kosta's burned down last year or earlier. Somebody showed us photos of  this sad event on VC.  Thanks for the memories..... judy in NB
