Latest Verdun council meeting

I went to the most recent boro council meeting in Verdun, seems to be the first hosted by the new mayor from Nun's Island (forgot his name), he read from a little speech while sitting down and they gave a bravery award to some little kid who did something that I didn't fully catch. The councillors were mostly new, I think every elected official down there is French. Newly retired longtime West Verdun councillor John Gallagher was in the audience with his wife. About 75 people showed up, 13 of them asked questions, none of the particularly hostile variety. One old English guy who has been going to the meetings for years did a little speech about the poorly salted sidewalks, another young woman complained that the streets weren't clean enough, one woman complained about the usual Nun's Island green space thing and a few others spoke. It wasn't particularly exciting, but supposedly a lot of info will be posted on the internet in the future concerning such meetings so you'll be able to follow it better if you're interested.

As to update my hospital stay. On Sept. 24, 2005 went into hospital to have dislocated elbow reset,,awoke to find that could not walk any more cause of my MS.
After 2 months they  found a place for me (another hospital) on my leg muscles telling me that I would never walk again. This was to kill the leg spasms, of which I still have to this day.
Then on Dec. 7 had an attack of heart burn at 3 AM..they  did an EKG and found irregular heart beat.Off to another hospital where they after tests that had 5, yes FIVE blocked arteries. On the edge of a heart attack. So on Dec 22, 2005, had open heart surgery, and as type this am still in the hospital, to be released end of March........

Johnny Cash.

It's the birthday of the singer and songwriter Johnny Cash, born in
Kingsland, Arkansas (1932). He grew up in the middle of the Great
Depression, his parents struggling to pay the bills on a cotton farm
they'd bought with help from a New Deal program. When he was twelve
years old Cash watched his brother die in a table-saw accident. He
never forgot how his mother had to return to working the farm the day
after the funeral.

It was his mother who played guitar and sang songs to Cash and his
siblings. But Cash didn't learn how to play music himself until he
enlisted in the Air Force and went off to Germany. He began playing
music and performing there with his fellow servicemen.

One night, they were showing a movie on the base about the conditions
at a prison back in America called Folsom Prison. The movie made such
an impression on Cash that he decided to write a song about it called
"Folsom Prison Blues." When Cash got discharged, he took a job as a
door-to-door appliance salesman in Memphis. But around the same time,
he hooked up with a couple other musicians and got an audition at Sun
Records. The third song they recorded was "Folsom Prison Blues" and it
made Cash famous.

He married June Carter in 1968 and they were married until June's death
in May of 2003. Johnny Cash died a few months later.

Blue Bonnets

The first race track on the Island of Montreal was named "Fashion Race Course" and was situated in Lachine, Before the inauguration of the train between Lachine and Montreal in 1847, those who wanted to see these races had to take one of 30 horse drawn carriages at their disposal from McGill Street to the entrance of Lachine. It was there that a Scotchman named Alexander Rae opened a tavern named "Blue Bonnets". At that period, his tavern was so popular that the whole village of Lachine had the nickname "Blue Bonnets". In 1907, the actual race track was inaugurated on Décarie Blvd and it was decided to give it the name of Alexander Rae's tavern.

I found the enclosed map of Verdun dated 1899 at the SHGV yesterday. Building construction extended to Rockland which is the old name for Willibrord and there was nothing beyond except that the lots where subdivided. Also to the east, the streets north of Joseph  where removed to allow for the water purification plant and basin. Joseph street extends to Atwater thus replacing Holmfield and Regina, Strathmore and Traherne end at Joseph and Upsala changed to Atwater. Eldon, Field, Golden and Nepigon where removed.  Also notice the old rivière St Pierre.
I am also including a list of the streets of 1899 and notice that some names have changed.

Rue Ste Catherine Street

Montral Landmarks- Sherwin Williams Paint Sign

Les_F,
Checked the Bibliotheque National du Québec site and sure enough your picture of Monkland Boul is shown with additional information. There is talk that perhaps a booklet showing the  before and present pictures of Verdun landmarks that were recently displayed at the Verdun Library may be published. If so, I will keep everyone informed.
Do you or other members remember the Sherwin Williams Paint Co. sign on Atwater between Centre and St Patrick. It consisted of a gallon of paint being poored on planet earth and hung above the street. We would contemplate that sign waiting in traffic when the bridge was open to let the boats pass. It would be nice to see a picture of that sign.

Intro

Hi, nice to be here.  I've been lurking for a while and decided to speak up. I'm Laura Weston (nee Lefebvre) and I grew up in Crawford Park, on Clemenceau.  Went to St. Thomas More School and graduated from VCCHS, class of 83.

My husband Leonard grew up in Pointe St Charles and went to VHS.

We've lived in Mississauga, Ontario since the late 80's but Leonard's family lives in Verdun.

It was a great place to grow up.
