École Bannantyne School

Voici une vieille photo (Archive SHGV) de l'École Bannantyne qui était située au coin de Galt. Cette photo date d'environ 1920 et veuillez noter qu'il n'y avait pas de bâtisse en face.

Here is an old photo (SHGV Archive) circa 1920 of the Banantyne school which was situated at the corner of Galt. Notice that there were no building facing the school at that time.

Guy...you have absolutely no idea how happy this photo has made me - THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been dying to find a photo of my old elementary school and now I have one. Brought a tear to my eye for bygone days and memories have come storming back.... Playing "Flips" with my hockey and baseball cards against the basement wall... Walking thru the main doors and seeing the secretary's/school office to the right and the principal's office to the left. In that same immediate hallway just across was the Kindergarten classroom and just down the hall a bit on the right was the nurse's office. I can see the Canadian flags in the corner of each classroom and the framed print of the Queen on the wall. And I can hear the children singing O Canada and God save the Queen. I smell that "school smell", the new paint that was put on each summer I guess. The freshly varnished gym floor and the balcony all around above. Oh my God...I even remember Mr. Bellizi, the school janitor, who would cut the kid's apples and oranges for them at recess. I can hear the bell ringing and see all the kids inline in the schoolyard. I suddenly remember a teacher I hadn't remembered before when I was trying to recall them - Mrs. Robillard! A short plump lady with glasses. I could go on and on, Guy...thank you again for these wonderful stirrings of memories!

Does anyone who went to Bannantyne School happen to remember the ADDRESS it was on bannatyne Ave? I remember it being 4222 (4242?) for some reason but I could be wrong. Also, the main entrance/office was where the building cut in towards the right of the photo, I remember there being a fnece across that small area and a small grassy area on either side of the walkway to the stairs...is it just me? Does anyone know what date the school was built and later on, demolished? I don't know the answers...I want to know...lol.

Good work, Guy!  There appears to be no buildings on this side of Bannantyne & Galt but if you would follow the Hydro pole I'm sure you would start to see buildings.  We used to own the tri-plex on the corner of Bannantyne & Gordon (4281) and from the records, deeds, etc. I traced it back to 1911. I don't know if the school was built before or after our building.   You're correct about the fence in front Sharon.  I went to Bannantyne School from '63-68 (I was at Connaught School in Cote-St-Paul before we moved).  There was fences at the main entrance with iron gates.  A small graasy patch on each side along with 2 flag poles (unless my memory is playing tricks on me.....lol).  I don't really recall a Mr. Bellizi, the girls might remember him more. The smell of school hallways is unmistakenable.  Also the school yard where we would jump the fence and play rubber ball against a HUGE wall.  We all tried to hit the small square at the top with the buildings' date carved in stone.  Mr. Johnson (gym teacher) trying to teach us soccer & cricket in the small schoolyard (re: ashphalt jungle).  I will never forget a guy by the name of Stanton Franklin. He used to wander up to the plate with a softball bat on his shoulders, wait for the pitch and swing at the last possible moment. The ball would go sailing and we had to fetch it accross the street at Charlebois Glass.  Not bad for elementary school.  (He should have tried out for the Major Leagues). Something else also stands out in my memory.  A crossing guard at the corner of Bannantyne & Gordon named "Pops". A big, man who gave candy to the kids.  He was always there year after year.   Am sure one of my old report cards from the school would have the address on it (along with class pictures)  which are packed in a box, deep in some corner of the basement my wife calls the "abyss".  I'll let you know when I get a real good nostalgic urge.   HF&RV   Mac.

Sharon:         Someone posted a picture recently showing the entrance that you describe. I could not find it in a photo album here. Perhaps the person ( Les? JM? Guy?) could repost. I also went to Bannantyne school for part of grades 1 & 2 before moving "west" and changing to Woodland School. I would have gone to Bannantyne around 1962 - 1963. I seem to remember a teacher as Miss Titcombe ???????     Ralph.

I remember Mr. Belizzi. We thought he was amazing because he cut our apples to show the "star". I also remember there being 3 schoolyards. A small one on the Galt side that may have been for the early grades, an upper level one that was for kindergarten only and the very large main yard on the Gordon side. All we had was a slab of cement and our imaginations......That would be cruel and unusual punishment these days! LOL

oooops, forgot to post that picture of the front entrance of Bannantyne School. Sorry, the pic is a bit fuzzy (like my brain)

Sharon,  you could very well be right about the address,.....because when I lived on Wellington St btwn Galt & Gordon,.....my address was 4242,......so it stands to reason that going up to Bannantyne,...would be the same block address.....HV&RV

Sharon, Bannantyne school was built in 1910 by the Verdun Protestant Board of School Trustees. I don’t know the date of demolition. JM

Jim I appreciate you mentioning the year Bannantyne school was built
because I could not remember as for the demolition I believe it was
somewhere between June 1974 and June 1978, because I left Bannantyne school
in June of 1974, started Woodland in September of that year and in September
of 1977 I met the teacher I had at Bannantyne School and she was still at
Woodland when I left there in June 1978.

You are very close when you assumed the address of Bannanntyne
School was 4242 Bannantyne but you are wrong, let's put it this way the
number that's wrong is the third number (second 4) the correct address for
Bannanntyne School is 4222 Bannantyne.

bpl4719 MSN said...

Sharon the correct address for Bannantyne School is 4222 Bannantyne

bpl4719 MSN said...

yeah that is the entrance for the school on Bannantyne, if I remember
correctly I believe the entrance was practically in the middle of the block.

Wow Bannantyne was built in 1910?? I didn't realize it was that old! So it was over 50 years old by the time I went there in the 60's....wow. Now that I think about it haha I can remember the teachers opening the upper part of the windows with that long pole that had a hook on it, remember that? The hook fit into a hole in the middle of the frame at the top and the teacher's pulled it down to open it. That should have been an indication of how old the school was...lol.   *Brian below is my post that I copied and pasted here: As you can see I actually DID have the address right!  Thanks for confirming it tho...as you can see I wasn't "absolutely" sure lol.   >>>Does anyone who went to Bannantyne School happen to remember the ADDRESS it was on bannatyne Ave? I remember it being 4222 (4242?) for some reason but I could be wrong. <<<

That's the entrance of Bannantyne school that's on Bannantyne, If
my memory serves me right the entrance was on Bannantyne in the middle of
the block.

the gym teacher at the time you were there was Mr. Johnson, was
there a teacher there while you were there whose name is Miss Reeves? Was
Mr. Johnson there when you left?

bpl4719 MSN said...

no problem Sharon I remember that from when I went there.

sharon_starr MSN said...

Brian....I do seem to faintly remember a Miss reeves but I don't think I ever had her as a teacher...what grade did she teach? Yes I had Mr. Johnson, who was from England, but no I think he left as I seem to remember having a woman gym teacher too...

You're starting to jog my memory BPL4719.  I recall that Bannantyne School had been abandoned for several years before they demolished it and the new construction started. Might be somewhere around 1980-1985.  BTW the site now is social housing for lower income groups. Mac.

This is the building which now stands where Bannantyne School  once stood.

bpl4719 MSN said...

quite possible because now that I think about it I remember
asking the teacher I had in Bannantyne whom I saw 4 years later at Woodland
(which was my last year at Woodland) why she came to Woodland and she said
the school closed after the last school year (1976-1977). I finished
Woodland in June 1978. Mrs.Johnson (in Bannantyne she was Miss Reeves) was
still at Woodland she started there in the 1977-1978 school year.

Hi Margo,   Mr.Harrison retired when I was at Bannantyne School when I was there in the 40's & 50's and I believed was replaced by Mr. Larocque from Model School on Lasalle Blvd.   Reggie Paine

Miss Reeves at the time I was in Bannantyne taught grade 1 by the
way she is married now her married name is Johnson.

bfantie MSN said...

I'm pretty sure that Miss Reeves is Debbie Reeves, who graduated from VHS in 1969. She was among several VHS grads who taught at Bannantyne in the 70s & 80s (also Janice Hastie & Louise Smith). I was a substitute teacher there while I did my BA at Concordia.

Ed Meehan was the principal at the time. He was a tough guy when he was Vice Principal of the VHS Annex at Woodland...but a sweetheart as a principal. A smart fellow, an excellent leader, and a very good colleague.

I am not sure if your right on the first name of the MIss
Reeves that was my teacher at Bannantyne but I can tell you that she did not
teach at Bannantyne in the 80's because she came to Woodland in the
1977-1978 school year which was my last year at Woodland and I learned then
she married and is now Mrs. Johnson.

I went to Kindergarten at Bannantyne in 1976, my teacher was Miss Rapkin, anyone know what became if her? I remember having a sandbox in the classroom and thinking it was so cool. One of my best friends was a red haired girl named Jenny Chano, and a little boy named Patrick who always wore a tie, love to contact them lol.

I went to bannantyne school back in 1968- was in kindergarten. I lived on church street and walked (by myself!) to school

I attended Bannatyne school and was in the last graduating class (grade 7) in 1976-1977. The school was then demolished. I had Mr. Max for gym and Mr. Twerdun was the principal.

Hi. I lived on church st from 1968 to 1977. I went to bannantyne until grade 2. I rememeber only two names from my childhood there. William Dare and Brian St James. You were very brave to walk to school by yourself. We travelled in packs for safety. Maybe so atleast one of us could tell the story if the rest didnt make it. Lived across from Trevi Pizza.

Hi. Some of you would know me as Wendy Snow. I went to Bannantyne School and graduated in 1970. So many memories of the school. As I read some of the posts I felt like I was walking down the hall of the school past the bench across from the principals office that children would wait on for the punishment. Waiting must have been the hardest part. I remember teachers such as Miss Law, Mr. Richmond, Miss Grey and Mr. Johnson (only to name a few). I remember the words BOYS and GIRLS being written above the doors to enter the Kindergarten room and the wooden shoe that we learned to tie our shoes on (no velcro in those days). My best friend was Diane Capstick and still is but there are other names that bounce around in my head all the time.

hi Wendy our families grew up together with our back galleries all looking into the same space. You guys lived on Gordon (near the lane and CKVL) and we lived on Wellington over the Mt Royal Furniture store ,later to become the bargain basement store (like a dollar store)
Glad you surfed by and had some memories from long ago. Take care Cheers ! LesF
