What do you miss/don't miss about Verdun

Here's one for all you former Verdunites, What do you miss and don't miss since you have left Verdun:

I'm in North Vancouver so
Here's my list
What I miss is:

Steamed hot dogs, smoked meat from Addams, grocery delivery, pizza from Kosta's, Riverview and Woodland pizza, sitting and chewwing the fat on your neighbours balcony, some great friends, fishing down by the rapids, a good subway system, great night life and a whole lot more

What I don't miss:

The cold winters, the humid summers, watching my car rot out from salt exposure, pot holes and a handful of things I can't right now

Does anyone know Sandra Ryan? Born in 1955

Canadian Irish History

Just finished a great book on the Irish Potato Famine of 1845 -- 1850.
'The Black Potato' by Susan Campbell Bartoletti.
A horrible 5 years for millions of Irish families. The population of
Ireland is approximately 4 million today, as compared to 8 million in
1845. Either starved to death or emigrated.
Of those who emigrated to Canada, and the US, many died of ship fever
(Typhus), either on route or after disembarking.

A Jaunt in Verdun

I was recently in Verdun and took a couple of walks accompanied with my digital camera.

The results are posted in the pictures section under "More present day Verdun Photos".

The pics were taken from the prespective of someone who no longer lives in Verdun but grew up in the 50s 60s till mid 70s.

I began my first walk at the corner of my Street. Allard Ave. and Bannantyne. Walked along Bannantyne going up and down a few streets along the way. Went up Woodland and along Verdun then up and along the boardwalk and rivers edge.

I have more pics from more walks and will post them later

Comments and corrections are definately welcome.

Verdun Small Fry Football PIcture

I think Flood might like get a kick out of this pic.

I came across this 1962 picture taken at the Verdun stadium of the Cardinals small fry football team.
This was the first year that this younger age level of 10-11 year olds began. The other team in the league at that time was the Vikings.

Anyone out there recoginze anyone from this pic I would love to know who they are as I can't remember any of old team mates. Im on the right end of the bench no 8. The same position I played on the field. Ofensive end.

Anyone remember any of the Vikings players I would like to know who they are.
I believe one of the one was Keith Gill as I recall he played opposite me on the Vikings.
I know several of these players went on to play for Black and Gold Bengals under Bob Geary in 69 / 70 who took the Canadian Championship.

A&P

Just a little info on GAP (The Great Atlantic and Pacific Company), or as we know it the A&P. The United States owners are reorganizing and one of the things on their agenda is to sell off the Canadian A&P. Maybe this might be the end of those stores in Canada. If anyone sees one, they better take some pictures. Just another part of history going away?????? Winston Allison

Presents

Reggie. Talking about Christmas presents. I tell my kids and grandkids. The most presents I ever got when I was a kid, was 7. No toys mind you. It would be socks, underwear(and not a package of 6), shirt, maybe winter gloves. BUT NEVER ANY TOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh well, I guess most of us in Verdun were in the same boat. It was still great. Eddie Featherstone

Trailer127/ShipleyBH2      Eddie Featherstone is still around. He should be retired now, but if he isn't, he is still working in the business. Eddie lived at 841 3rd Avenue, and I lived at 835 3rd Avenue. The Alexander name sounds familiar, but I can't seem to place the face. Winston Allison

Population of Verdun

Les_F If you stop and think about it. When we were growing up in Verdun, people were having more kids. It seemed like almost everyone had 5 kids or more. There of course were a lot that didn't But just in our block(833-835-837-839-841-843 3rd avenue) there were a total of 27 kids, and 10 adults. Nowadays people have decided not to have big families. . Silver Dragon Chinese Food.

I was trying to make some extra money at a second job before moving back to the United States.  I worked for a straight 365 days at the Silver Dragon (without a day off) and that included Christmas. And As a delivery person, the drivers where allowed to eat anything they wanted, except steaks. That was around 1970 or late 60's. All the money we made was under the table. The food was great, and I can tell you that everything they made and sold was top quality at all times. The stories everyone has heard is a bunch of hogwash, that someone said and was repeated by someone else, who told someone else. It took them awhile to regain their reputation, but I can tell you that the business did not suffer as much as we would think. The bars would close, and the restaurant would fill up. It never stopped. Winston Allison

Fifth Avenue Theatre

The Fifth Avenue Theatre used to have Rock and Roll Bands performing at 3:00 PM on Saturday afternoons. Johnny Mulalley(spelling) used to perform and was very good. I used to meet Johnny at Greenwood Racetrack in Toronto. There was another performer who was an Elvis impersonater and he was in my class in Grade 10 at Verdun High School. Lloyd Sevigny was his name. Has anyone ever heard anything about this performer? He was the best as far as I was concerned.

Would appreciate any any on Lloyd.

coke/lime

ShirleyBH2 My wife (Billie) and I go to Las Vegas numerous times during the year. The only thing we drink and have for many years, is diet coke with a slice of lime. We have been doing that since about 1980. We don't plan on buying any of it. Winston Allison
