Remembering Verdun - Mat Night

We used to love Mat Night.
One year my girlfriends and I, I guess there was about 6 of us, gathered
the mats from most of the flat on Manning, Moffat and Beatty (between Verdun Ave.
and Bannantyne) and lined them up, starting at the front door of St. John the
Devine church on Moffat.  We had
them coming down the front path and then turning right and left of the path along
the sidewalks.

My girl friends and I did the same but Mat night has changed over the years, we would take mats , toilet paper house ,egg house ,and the old put tooth paste under the car door handle.
I haven't done that it 10 years.

Ah yes, Matt Night. My dad used to bring me home roles of toilet paper, small cans of shaving cream and bars of soap (he worked at CN in the Pointe). Away, we went having all kinds of good fun.....   We did get a "little out of hand" as we got a bit older. The old fill up the paper bag with dog poop trick....lay the bag in front of someones door (usually the french kids we hated!) set it on fire, and ring the doorbell......   Stomp, stomp, stomp......put out that fire. Perhaps we were a little more rowdy in Lasalle. LOL.

What era was this?? I have neverheard of mat night.  When was it - it almost sounds like some of the hi-ginks the boys got up to for Firecracker Day (Queen Victoria's Birthday in May)

"Mat" night is the night before hallowe'en. At least in Verdun it was when I grew up in the 70's. Usually a night of wild youth pulling silly pranks. (Wahahahahaha) Started off with the old "switch all the neighbour's mats" trick. Thus the name. When I moved to Calgary, it was an unknown event. Here in Saskatchewan, it seems to be combined into the one night (Hallowe'en). Many efforts are made to keep all those pranksters off the streets. A local service club puts on a big Hallowe'en party for teens here (that has it's own problems) that does keep most of them occupied. Oh the youth of today are so gullible!
