Hello Verdunites

Just want to say hi to all of you group members. I may know some of you.
I came about the group while surfing for info on Verdun.
I was raised in Verdun and lived there from 1940 to 1960.
I lived at 470 Gordon and reading some of the trivia sure brings back some good old memories of Verdun and it's surroundings.
Went to St Willibroad's from the 1st grade to the 7th.
My folks owned the store at the corner of Bannantyne and Gordon, it was called Mado's then.
I left Verdun in 1960 and joined the US Navy, spent 20 years running ariund the world and finally settled down in California, "No Winters"

If any of you want to send an email, it will be very welcome, Looking to maybe find some of my old friends from that era.

Best Regards to all,

Bob Gaboury

Bob Gaboury(USNVAY BOB) Welcome to our site. I remember that store on Gordon & Bannantyne. I went to Bannantyne school and visited that store as a kid many time. ( I am sure Bill Cooper-who is also on this site, visited that store also). We have similar stories. I joined the US Marines in 1960. Lived on 3rd Avenue (835) from 1940. Good to have you here. I can almost guarantee you will know someone on this site, or someone who knows someone you know. This is a friendly place. Enjoy every minute. I live in Vancouver, Washington. Winston Allison

hehe, it must have been the 60's! I wasn't at Bannantyne for grades 5 and 6 but I think we had Miss Craig in grade 7. Were you in my class then?

Hi Shamrock! Welcome to the group! Wow...we had a lot of the same teachers! How old are you? Maybe we were even in the same classes! I had Miss Brayer for grade 2, Mrs. Ruby for grade 3, Robillard for grade 4 and I believe it was Mrs. Sternthal for grade 5. I can't remember the name of our teacher in grade 1...Maggie, what was it again? We were in the same calss...REMEMBER? Grades 5 and 6 I was in Lasalle and grade 7 I was at Woodland. High school was good old Verdun High of course. Do I look familiar to you at all?

Hi, I knew a Filiatrault, his name was Billy and he was a member of the Grand Truck Boating Club.  I think he had an older brother named Pat. I think Billy would be in his 50's now.

Hello Dave, I left Verdun in 1960, crossed the border into Plattsburg and joined the US Navy, off to Boot in Great Lakes for the cold season, December 1960 to March of 1961. After 2 weeks of furlough in Montreal I was off to NewPort, RI where I reported aboard the USS Mills DER 383, I am the webmaster for that ship's web page now, take a look. http://www.ussmills.net    Spent 2 years on her with many deployments to the DEW. I was also on the Cuban Missle Blockade with her. After the Cuban Blockade episode, I was transferred to Great Lakes, IL for some schooling and came out of there as an IC3 (Interiorcommunications 3rd Class) Went aboard the USS Joseph Strauss (DDG16) for 2 years as an IC3. After that I cross-rated to the Construction Rates, and became a SeaBee in the electricial field. From there I could go on and on for another 16 years of duty throughout the world, including 2 tours to Viet Nam  from 1968 to 1971. Finally retired out of Okinawa Japan, and set out for Sunny California, been here ever since. I make several visits a year to Verdun to see my relatives and friends. Will be there for Christmas and new Years 2004/2005. If any of you wish to visit my Family Web Page Click here to enter   Best Regards to all, And I salute you all for the upcoming Day of Rememberance in Canada.   Bob (USNavyBob) Gaboury

Hello Dave, We pretty much were on the same paths, I went aboard the USS Mills Der 383 out of Newport, we baby sat the USS Champlain at the entrance to Gitmo. I went from the deck force to Gunnery and then on to IC A School in Great lakes, onto a DDG 16 The USS Joseph Strauss spent a year on her  and after that the IC rate was moving into the missle field, so I had to cross rate because of not being a US Citizen. I ended up as an CE in the Bees. You know "We Build We Fight" did 20 years, retired with a full pension and just became a citizen in 1997. Lots of duty stations in beteween 1960 and 1980, including 2 tours in country with the bees 1967/68/69/and 1970.

Hey SweetnSlow1,   I was going to respond with a long winded assertation on the pros and cons of your broad minded opinion. But it was not worth the effort.   Wear your Poppy proudly and Have a Happy Rememberance Day USNavyBob Bob Gaboury

Sweetnlow. Maybe you  don't know much about the history of World War 2. But the Americans were not anxious to get into that war. MANY, MANY Americans went to Canada and England to join those FORIEGN countries in their struggle to fight against the Nazi's. These were brave people who felt a need to help Canada and its allies. I can assure you  that not any or very few asked them why they didn't join their own countries armed forces. Also many Americans fought in China against the communists during World War 2, before the US entered the war.   This may not be a site for a debate, and that is not my intention. Just to let you know that each of us on this site that came from Canada to the USA to join up, did it for various reasons, and I can assure you that we are equally proud to have done so. On a personal note, my father died in 1943 in the Canadaian Army, when a machine gun exploded on him. I am proud of his service, as I am proud of all members of anyone who serves in the armed forces of the US or Canada. Winston Allison

Morning to Ya All,   A brisk clear morning here in California.   A week from today the wife and I will be packing our bags, which will include our cold weather survival gear and heading for Verdun / Montreal.   Spending Christmas with the family and New Years at a planned New Years eve party at a hotel in Sorel with some of the gang that I grew up with in Verdun.   Linda and I have returned to Montreal for New Years for the past several years, finding that the New Years festivities are celebrated with a bigger bang there than here in California.   Gonna take a look at the web cams set up in Montreal and surrounding area, maybe get some preminition of what we are in for. Brrrrrrrrrr
