I remember having to sell Red Cross calendars in school, and silly buttons with the Red Cross printed on them.  I also remember mello rolls....ice cream which was in a cardboard tube, which you peeled off before placing in a cone.  I remember the double cones where the 2 scoops of ice cream were side by side in a double cone.  I remember when all telephones were rotary dial black desk sets, and everyone had a party line, and the telephone numbers were PO(ntiac) 3397 or HE(mlock) 3397.   My mom (bless her soul) was forever saying ... "I remember when I was young", now I find myself mumbling "Mirror, mirror, on the wall I am my mother after all!"   Cheers, Linda

Hi kungfu,  I remember when you could buy 2 hotdogs a drink and a fry for 35 cents at Normans. Now my 11 year old son wants 10.00 dollars to go have lunch with his school buddies. I remember when sticking Pinky Stamps in a book was considered a fun thing to pass time and not drive my mother nuts. And spending endless hours trying to make a house out of a deck of cards just for someone to open a door and blow it down. Or squating down on the middle of the sidewalk on 3rd ave. playing jacks with every other kid on the block. Or just burning holes in a piece of paper with a .10 cent magnifine glass. I still have the magnifine glass but now use it to read. Dannyb-

Hi Patricia......I remember the horse and wagon or sleigh in the winter....very well....My Dad was a milkman.  He used to cross the old Victoria bridge with his horse and sleigh to make the deliveries.  I remember him coming home covered in frost.... his beard and even his eyebrows.  In summer he used to come home for lunch and park the wagon on the street (Angyle Ave.)  He would put the feed bag on the horse and go in for his lunch.  Then after lunch he would have an apple or carrots or maybe a couple of sugarcubes for a treat for the horse.  The horse soon got used to this...and...one day I guess the horse thought he was not coming out soon enough....so the horse decided to come into the house.....He got over the sidewalk.....into the yard....and up to the stairs but got the wagon caught in the fence.  Lucky we lived on the ground floor....  My poor Dad ended up putting a new fence up.....Lots of $$$ in those days.

Re the old telephones, if I remember correctly Pontiac (PO) was the first of the seven digit numbers. It was POntiac 6, Previous to that there was HEmlock which became POntiac 7, TRenmore which became POntiac 8 and YOrk which became POntiac 9

I remember that the Steinberg's on the corner of Wellington and Willibrord had a little GIRL who had her wagon and took your orders home too! LOL That would be MOI! Hey....screw that....I was getting in on the money too, man! haha My bro and I would take turns using the wagon but we'd do the orders TOGETHER at Xmas cuz the orders were so BIG and the people gave you double the money! :-D Luv, Sharon

Does anyone who went to Bannantyne School or lived in that area in the 60's remember the ice cream place at the corner of Galt and Verdun? I think maybe it was called the Cheval Blanc or something? Anyway. they used to make these popsicle things in plastic cups with a popsicle stik in them and they sold them really cheap! They were SO giood too! Better flavor that regular popsicles. Only thing was by the time ya got home they had melted and run all down your arms and chin and stained them hehehe. That just made them BETTER if you ask me! Luv, Sharon

I ALSO REMEMBER DELIVERING GROCERIES WITH MY WAGON AT STEINBERGS AND DOMINION. WE ALWAYS REMEMBERED WHO THE BEST TIPPERS WERE AT GOT THEM BEFORE ANYONE ELSE DID. I REMEMBER THERE WAS THIS ONE GUY TRYING TO GET AHEAD OF US ALL THE TIME SO THE REST OF US DECIDED TO GET HIM GOOD. WE PRETENDED TO GIVE HIM CHOCOLATE BUT IT WAS EX-LAX. WELL YOU CAN IMAGINE HE DIDN'T STICK AROUND TOO LONG AFTER THAT.

sharon_starr MSN said...

Remember these words...."Can I take your order, Madame?" ? hehe We'd go around the store looking at people's carts to see who had a lot and go up and ask them that. The grocery store put an end to that after awhile, we had to wait outside till the people came to us. Wasn't too bad tho, a lot of the people took the same girl or boy so after awhile you had your "regulars" LOL. Oh man....the good ole days! Luv, Sharon

Hi Audrey,  I don't know you personally, I did work with George in the early 70's. He was my menchanic at Montgomery Elevators for a short while. He was a great guy to work with. There are a lot of people who rather use a nicname than their own until someone they know from the past posts a message. Then they tell us who they are. Maybe now that you have posted a message some old friends will come out from the sidelines.   Dannyb-

WELL HE COULDN'T GET THEM THAT CHEAP SO WE HAD TO DRIVE OVER TO DOMINION'S ON THOSE BIG BOX DELIVER BIKES FILL THEM UP WITH POP. YOU HAD TO BE CAREFUL SO THE BIKE DIDN'T FLIP. BRING THEM BACK TO CURRIES, DUMPED THEM UPSIDE DOWN IN THE SINK OF WATER TO GET THE 19 CENT LABELS OFF OF THEM, DRY THEM OFF AND PUT THEM ON THE SHELF WHICH HE SOLD FOR FULL PRICE.

Bev Shaw..to many to mention ..we all hung around the dances..what great memories. Well I better cut it or will go on forever Dee

Hi Jimmy,  I remember Hank Batten well he was a little older but for awhile we hung around.. He was g great guy, losing his wife was hard as it is for anyone but when he lost his daughter if was devastating to him.  The last memories I have of him was every year he would do Kenny Rodgers at the  Lasalle Legions March of dimes show .  As to some of the other memories, yes I remember the 2nd World War as I had uncles over there and my patents had friends that lost sons.  Sunday afternoon's were always spent at the Savoy, previews, world news and two movies all for 35 cents Rock Hudson, Sandra Dee.  Also the 5th Ave. theatre where I could go anytime as my Grandmother Isabel MacKey and my Aunt Lexie Olgaviy off 4th ave worked.  Wearing Palmer moccasins in winter and guys with those sharp Bomber boots (fur lined) and zippers open were a must, jeans with cuffs, pony tails brown suede jackets and those great Elvis duck tail guys haircuts.  Boy the Fifties were sure great times. Never likes cherry coke but Tasseys was the 1st place to put gravy on the fries.  Tv's where you only seen the Indian head till 6 o'clock then the news came on.  Those were the days.  Audrey

Master Doughnuts! They used to spell Doughnut that way eh? Does anyone else remember that the caps on pop bottles used to actually have "corks" in them? the liners were made of cork. They even printed on them for some of the contests. What about using bread bags to shield our feet from our soaked or leaky winter boots? Can you imagine if we routinely sent our kids to school like that now?

I think the best French Fries with gravy were at Ma's Restaurant (this was across the street from Woodland School Annex). FF and gravey with an Uptown soft drink was heaven. I asked Ma once how she made the gravy. She said she never followed the same recipe twice. She had some great Christmas Eve parties in that restaurant.

My mother came from a large Irish Catholic family from the West End - my father was Protestant and he sure liked to take the piss out of my Granny and mom and he used to tease us - we were so gullible.  One Friday my father legitimately forgot it was Friday it was a rare occasion that my mother was working (mostly she was stay at home mom) my father fed us something with meat for lunch - then someone remembered that it was Friday and we had eaten meat - wonder we didnt puke it up we were just about hysterical.  My father being the kibitzer that he was and probably to keep us from puking and calm us down said to us "remember in your Cathechism where Jesus turned the water into wine and multiplied the loaves and the fishes - well on your way back to school you can stop at the rectory and ask the good father to bless your belly and turn the meat into fish"  So we were happy then so off to school we go - boy was my father ever in trouble when my mother got home perhaps she had gone somewhere with my granny - anyway of course the good father told us not to worry any more about eating the meat and run off to school now then he promptly called the school and a call was placed to the house.  Of course my father was probably hysterical laughing at his own joke and how gullible his wee kids were.
