attention BIM VCHS 1974 REUNION

Bim,

Hey cuz, went into the pictures files.  Wow memories!!  Anyways, I do not have a scanner hooked up yet and I noticed the "farewell to Old Friends", your wife has a VCHS yearbook from 1974 right??  Brenda Lee was murdered in August 1984.  She was a beautiful girl nicknamed"Jeans", who I remember loved Elton John and even though Cindy, her sister and I were only a year younger then her, we were a pain in her butt. Was that Ray O'Brien a tall blond who lived on Stephen's I think that was the road 1 over from me (I was on Rolland Ave) ???  The picture in there is too old but it looks like it is him.

Good old days

Does anyone remember the old movie theatre? I think It was called the Savoy. Back then when you went to see a movie they let you stay and watch it over and over....Now a days they are pushing you out as soon as the credits come on. I seem
to recall that there used to be some sort of coupon and just a few cents to get into the saturday matinees. And the popcorn machine was great. If you knew where to hit the machine it would give you extra popcorn. Then there was Big Jims' on the corner of Egan and Verdun ( I think Egan but then again maybe it was Osborne)..One Saturday his soft icecream machine broke down and instead of throwing all the icecream out he gave it all to us. Boy did my stomach ever hurt after that.. I don't think I could look at icecream again for at least a year. He used to have pinball machines and one called the gattling gun. That was when it didn't cost too much to play them. The good old days.

Verdun & Fires

Does anyone remember the outbreak of shed fires (as well as general building fires) that destroyed many homes in Verdun? One Christmas eve there was a small shed fire behind 260 Osborne where I lived at the time. Today there was a fire that destroyed the block including 1407 Manning. Everyone (including a woman I work with) lost all there belongings, According to the Pulse News, this fire was started by an unattended candle. Thankfully there were no injuries that were known of.

Auto Detailing

Hi Gang,

It's getting to be the time of year where I start with my small side business. I am an auto detailer, and I wash and polish cars without water! How do I do that? It's a product called Dri Wash 'N Guard. It's waterless carwash, and it's very easy. Just spray it on, wipe it off, and buff the haze. It is the most incredible product I have ever seen. I'm looking for people who want to have a home based business, and make a few bucks on the side. It's a great tax write off, and it's primarily the reason I got into it. I go to the customers home, and detail the vehicle inside and out. If anyone is interested in retailing, detailing, or want some information, please email me at hice01@rogers.com, and I will fill you in on the details. thanks, Mike

OLD FRIENDS

There are moments in life when you miss someone
so much that you just want to pick them from
your dreams and hug them for real!

When the door of happiness closes, another opens,
but often times we look so long at the
closed door that we don't see the one,
which has been opened for us.

Don't go for looks; they can deceive.
Don't go for wealth; even that fades away.
Go for someone who makes you smile,
because it takes only a smile to
make a dark day seem bright.
Find the one that makes your heart smile.

Dream what you want to dream,
go where you want to go,
be what you want to be,
because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things
you want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet,
enough trials to make you strong,
enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything
they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past
you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and
heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying
and everyone around you was smiling.
Live your life so at the end,
you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Please send this message to those people
who mean something to you (I JUST DID),to those who have touched your
life
in one way or another,to those who make you smile when you really need
it,
to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are
really
down,to those whose friendship you appreciate,to those who are so
meaningful in your life.

If you don't send it, don't worry,
nothing bad will happen to you;
you will just miss out on the opportunity
to brighten someone's day with this message!!!
Don't count the years-count the memories...........

Sharon, Did you find the photo of your grandfather? My brother
remembers him as a man with curly hair and a gravely voice who lived on
2nd Avenue between Wellington Ave. and Verdun Ave. Is this your
grandfather?

Anyone remember THIS song???

Ok well, this is wierd. This song was in one of my dreams last night. I haven't thought of or remembered this song in over 30 years...it's going on 40 years old now but I bet most of you here have sang it at some point or another!  I hope I remember it right...couldn't find it ANYWHERE on the Net!

CA-NA-DA
(One little two little three Canadians)
We love thee
(Now we are twenty million)
CA-NA-DA
(Four little five little six little Provinces)
Proud and free!
(Now we are ten and the Territories sea to sea)
North south east west
There'll be happy times, church bells will ring ring ring!
It's the hundredth anniversary of Confederation!
Everybody sing together!
CA-NA-DA

Then it continued with the French version, I believe....

Photo's wanted

I am wondering if someone out there has any photos of the old dam in La Salle taken around the end of the sixties and early seventies that they would like to post on the picture site. I almost lived there in the summer months with a few friends and never took any pictures, Thanks

More Old Pics

I've added a couple of old photos I found recently. Me on Brown Blvd in the early sixites with a friend whose name escapes me, another of a group of us who went to some sort of club at Dawson's. The older boy in the picture ran it if I'm not mistaken.
Then a great New Year's Eve party. This one I remember almost everyone!
Maggie

Re: Your Favorite Verdun Hangout

I think I also took part in most of your activities but I was fortunate to have lived on Brown Blvd. accross from the park. In summer we would play in the ball park, usually '3 pops or 5 grounders'.  Remember that game?  In winter we would play hockey for hours on the rink, hoping some older 'big' guy wouldn't take your head off with a slap shot. I can still hear that sound......a frozen puck resounding off the boards in the cold night air.  I lost my two front teeth in that hockey rink.......long before helmets and face masks!
Street hockey was a daily affair.  Moving the nets every time a car came down the street;using a frozen horse dropping for a puck.........at least it didn't hurt as much as a puck bouncing off your head!
In the summer we would walk out to the LaSalle Golf Club and caddy.  I can remember caddying for Doug Harvey and Dollard St. Laurent. I never realized then, what an honour that was.    Jim Long

Your favorite Verdun Hangout

I guess my favorite hangout when young in summer was the Natatorium on LaSalle Blvd, kinda lived there all summer , with our clothes in the basket and tag pinned on our trunks, clowns every sunday diving off of the high board, and winter had to be the streets and lanes playing ball hockey ,or Jumping off of the roofs into snow piles, in summer playing stando with tennis ball, marbles in the spring ,bunny in the hole , or stick , what an upbringing and  no money to speak of  , how about all of you , interesting reading it is  , hang tough Jimmy

Just My Thoughts

I just have a comment regarding some of the content on this group recently. It seems to me that there is an increase in slamming the US. Without getting into particulars or finger pointing, please bear in mind that there is a significant number of us who have chosen to live south of the border for whatever reason. Either way, comments like what have been made are discriminating, hurtful and really have no place in a group that has been set up as a repository for reminiscing the good times, shared by people with a common "Connection".

Thanks,
Alan Archibald

Tough Love?

Much has been said about "tough love" for misbehaving children.

Most of America's populace thinks it very improper to spank children, so my spouse and I have tried other methods to control our kids when they have one of "those moments".

One that we found very effective is for me just take the child for a car ride and talk.

They usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our little car ride together.

I've included the photo below of one of my sessions, with our son, in case you would like to use the technique.

Its very effective!

Ghosts of Griffintown.

Hello All,

The bad news is that Ghosts of Griffintown didn't make it into the
HotDocs

Festival in Toronto.

The good news is that it will be on CFCF on Saturday March 13 at 3 pm.

It is the shorter version (wonder what commercials they'll have?)

For ordering the longer version, the book, or just to read the
transcript.

A Question of Honor

Wednesday, March 3, 2004

I called that number....

....and got a freakin' ANSWERING MACHINE!
All those heart palpitations for nothing...lol. I didn't leave a message, I hung up. If I do have the right number, I don't want him fore-warned ya know? I'm also not going to open with "Are you Morris Edwards who has a daughter named Sharon?". Instead I've decided to ask if I've reached the right number for a Moe Edwards who was a photographer for The Montreal Star in the 60's and 70's. I know it sounds sneaky, but I also don't want to scare him off from the get-go and maybe have him lie and say it isn't him if it is. It was a woman's voice on the answering machine and she didn't say the name just a brief  "leave your name and number etc., so it could have been his wife or even a daughter...hey maybe I have another sis! LOL
Going to give it a try again this evening.
Fingers crossed everyone! LOL
Luv, Sharon

Why yes Glen I was one of the cheerleaders in red! Still have that skirt. Doesn't fit, oh well.  I KNEW you went out with Colleen, we have always remained friends and she told me some stuff about you when I stayed over one night.  Won't go into details, but let's just say I know you were a nimble little fellow back then...hee..hee.  Did not want to mention that!  I dated Gerry in high school, after he had been one of my best friends.  I could put Gerry in a figure four in seconds and make him scream like a woman. That's when we would hang out at ..umm what's his name??? Glen the wrestler's house. Anyways thought Gerry might be my "first", never happened and I broke up with him for no reason and escaped to ST. Hubert at my big sister's for a month. We remained friends. Remember at 15, 16 a month was a long time. We counted how long we dated someone by the week. Talked to Colleen when she was out here. Know people who are friends with her parents and yes they still live there.
