Famous People

I just this evening found out that William Shatner went to Verdun High School.  I knew he was a Canadian, and had gone to McGill Univ., but not that he had gone to VHS.  Does anyone know where he lived......would it have been Verdun?

My late husband who was 20 years older than me said that he went to Montreal High School with Oscar Peterson and that he live in St Henry at that time just up from Atwater market and off a side street from  St Cunegonde Church on Atwater that would have been around 1943-45

Hi - I have pictures of Buzz Berlin - my dad and him were friends during the 2nd world war.  He also had a brother david berlin  which I went out with.  He was quite the pilot from the stories my dad used to tell.  Do hear people mention his name very much.   Alice Conant

Maynard Ferguson born in Verdun - I didn't know that - did you! Found the info while browsing. Hey, you never know !!!     Maynard Ferguson, Trumpet Player, bandleader Originally printed in "Contemporary Musicians, Volume 7" Jazz legend Maynard Ferguson far surpasses the title "trumpet player"; he is an internationally famous big-band leader, one of the world's great brass players, and instrument designer, record producer, composer, arranger, producer of film soundtracks, and dedicated teacher. He is also a three-time Grammy Award nominee and Down Beat magazine award winner. The prolific bandleader has recorded over 60 albums in his lifetime. The alumni list of his band members over four decades reads like a Who's Who of the jazz world: Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione, Bill Chase, Bob James, Slide Hampton, Wayne Shorter, Greg Bissonette, Peter Erskine, Joe Zawinul, Willie Maiden, and Don Ellis are just some of the greats Ferguson's bands have bred. Ferguson emerged from big-band swing and worked his way through jazz, bebop, rock, funk, disco, and fusion. When he wasn't actually playing his horn, he conducted, cueing his men, or just snapped his fingers and enjoyed the music. He has been a hustler, a tireless worker, and remarkably generous with his musical abilities. Few careers have spanned so many different forms of music, tribute indeed to Ferguson's flexibility and staying power. Ferguson was a child prodigy who first soloed with the Canadian Broadcasting Company Orchestra at the age of 11. He was born in the Montreal suburb of Verdun on May 4, 1928. His mother was a violinist with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and later, a teacher who helped introduce music into the curriculum of the Montreal public school system. His father was a high school principal. By the time Ferguson was four, he too was playing the violin as well as the piano. At the age of nine he was enrolled in the French Conservatory of Music to receive formal training. He has cited his main influences as his mother and Louis Armstrong

I don't think that Bill Shatner actually went to Verdun High...I believe he went to a school by the name of Baron Byng but since that school was shut down in the, I believe early sixties....all info always lists his school as Verdun...the closest school to Baron.....can anyone else verify this?

give_me_one_one MSN said...

Wasn't Baron Bying the Jewish School

shirleybh2 MSN said...

Baron Byng was in Park Ex over by St. Urbain - Mordecai Richler probably attended Baron Byng -  beyond D'Arcy McGee and yes it had a heavy weighting of Jewish students.  For sure Verdun High School is not the closest to Baron Byng it would have been Montreal High School.  A girl who lived on the same street as me went to Baron Byng instead of Montreal High - she had learning problems and I think Baron Byng had special classes.

Montreal High closed don in the 60s.That's why V.C.H. got the Brothers as teachers. I remember playing hockey against

He earned a Bachelor's Degree in commerce From McGill University in 1952,Oh yes, by the way The Shatner Building at McGill is named after obvious reasons  He was also trained as a classical Shakespearean actor, and performed at the famed Shakespearan Stratford Festival of Canada, in Ontario . He also was on the Howdy Doody Show ( Does anyone out there remember that children's programme  ? ) in the U.S. as " Ranger Bill" He has also been on talk shows, and mentions Montreal, and N.D.G. so that may, or may not be the answer to your question ???     Sweet_N_Gorgeous Anna    ,.

I know this to be true  because to tell you the truth, I wrote that club, and recieved a Superman Pin, and a letter from Mike Boyd ( He actually read my letter on air mentioning it was a letter from a Canadian Fan, and with my last name I know there was no doubt about it , that was also read on air with great difficulty ! I recieved an  autographed Picture of George Reeves alias Superman, I wish I had that Memoribilia today, darn, I guess my Mom threw it out in the midst of moving , oh well ......... it might of been worth something today !   Sweet_N_Gorgeous Anna

Dear Bryan,
Not sure about Razzle Dazzle because I left Verdun June 1959 and lost track
of a lot of people people and events for many many years.
As for Bob Armstrong, yes he is my youngest brother, who now lives and works
just outside of Washigton D.C.
Must be you either went to school with him at Riverview or Woodland. He went
there for a couple of years after my Dad passed away and they moved to 5th
Ave, then back to Riverview School when they moved back to Bannantyne
across from Brown Blvd.
I'll check with Bob about Razzle Dazzle. He would probably know.

Les,   That is an interesting site re famous people.  I checked out the authors, of course, and as per usual, nary a one from west of Toronto..  There are so many great authors here and no one knows them east of Manitoba.  I was in the same boat when I lived in Montreal.  Never knew  any western writers except for WO Mitchell.  The literary scene begins and ends on Toronto.  It's still pathetic.    And Ruta Lee!  Wow!  I thought she was dead!  And she went to St. Willibrord's?  She's how old then...her photos are all of an earlier age when she was gorgeous.  I'm Lithuanian also, so heard her name tossed around alot in the community.    Leonard Cohen is and was overrated.  I don't get him and how these women fall for him.  He's just a dirty old man.  I read Beautiful Losers and it didn't do anything for me.  I have to shake my head.  Don't know what the attraction is.   You know I used to be one of those groupies in the late sixties and in awe of all these famous people especially movie stars.  Collected all those magazines:  Photoplay, Movie Screen, 16, etc and had scrapbooks of Frankie Avalon and Elvis and then the Beatles.  But you know what, they are like all of us...dare I say.  It's all publicity and media and people thinking they are what they portray on the screen.  But they're not.  They are just common folks making a lot of money to pay all their hair makeup wardrobe, agents, managers, etc.  They are just a product, a commodity and it's a tough business but the rewards are enormous.  And they have to make a lot of money 'cause they have all those people on their payroll.   It's always inspiring when you meet someone famous like Raymond Burr who still has his feet on the ground.  Thanks for the info!

Yes Sabby  Raymond Burr sure is firmly planted,.........not just his feet.........hahahahaha    as for Leonard Cohen,..he strikes me as being fairly normal,... He reminds me of that line from an AJ Croce (Jim Croce's son,.altogether different style music),...but in one of his songs there's line that goes:   " He's Got a Way with Women---- -----cause he just got Away, with mine"               hahahahahahaha   being in the spotlight ,as it were,  makes your personal life ,exposed,to  everyone, via the media,......I suggest that there are many citizens of this planet,.....that would not want their escapades 'highlighted' .............being under the microscope certainly can't be easy, I can think of many other celebrities who revell in the spotlight ,through magnifying their exploits.........as for Cohen ,I don't recall him really bragging or anything like that,...he has been linked to many women over the years,......& that can't be that bad (the linking part.............hahahahaha)  ,I think that part is normal, very unlike the owner of the Neverland Ranch..............who should never even be mentioned in the same sentance as the word Normal.............hahahahaha                                                          HF&RV

My sister Berniece Brown and I went to dancing class with Ruta at Lois Mcgillop's Dance and last year Berniece met up with Ruta at a show she does. Berniece went backstage and reminded her about those days in Verdun and she remembered the dance school, I think it was on Wellington (not positive on that). Berniece lives in San Diego but I think it was possibly in Palm Springs that the show was on. Ruta still looks great from the pictures Berniece took of them together. I visited San Diego in February for my sisters' 50th Wedding Anniversary from England, where I now live and read the Verdun Connections.
