Turkeys!

You'll never look at them they same way once you deep fry one! I cook a 16lb turkey in 3 gallons of peanut oil at 375 degrees. Ready to eat in just under 35 minutes! The taste is so different, you can't believe it is turkey! Getting ready to cook a couple next week when the New England Patriots (Superbowl bound!) take to the field!

Re. Say Hello here

Hi Jimmy, When you stand at the corner of Church & Wellington next week, can
you still see the Place Ville Marie in the distance.? Because that's where I
first met you in 1960 when I started in the elevator trade. And at times I was
your helper so how's your memory. Take care Jim, From Bob Archie

High School Year Books

I tried searching for high school year books on eBay.com, and found
nothing on both their US and Canadian sites. Maybe I am not doing a
correct search, or no one wishes to part with their treasured Y.Bs.
If anyone would like to sell their Verdun High Y.B. or loan it to me
I'll make copies), I would be very happy. I need the years 1953 through
1957.
Also if you could scan your copy and post it here or email me direct
that would be good too. cooperw001@hawaii.rr.com.
Have a most excellent Christmas.

Verdun Dreamin'

After reading the discussions/notes concerning memories of the "Good Old Days" my nostalgia sensors kicked in. Having left Verdun in 1952, after graduating VHS, there were lots of memories left behind. Several BAD ones, but MORE of the GOOD ones! The 40's were the best! Verdun was smaller, there were green fields, open spaces just past Crawford Park, Ville Lasalle was hardly populated. A bicycle ride from Verdun along Lasalle Boulevard was an adventure. Pedalling over to 'Caughganawaga' and Chief 'Poking Fire's Teepee, with swims in the river along the way.We rowed out to Nun's Island in an old two pointed row-boat and camped there overnite, there was no bridge, no buildings, Golf course or people. Our little group of friends once swam across to Nun's Island ,knowing where to take a 'stand up break' We shot the RAPIDS in that old boat and survived! We saw the ice breakup every spring and soon rowed out to the island thru the ice floes! Couldn't wait til summer.Swimming at the Nat just after it was built was a blast! Seemed like a long summer, then, but living here in Florida is where the endless summer really is and yep, I'm still into adventures!  Actually living the memories and dreams I had then.Verdun was a good beginning, prepared me for adventures in California(25 years) and now Florida! If you want adventure, try sailing! Surfing,Diving and just pedalling a bike, yep, I still do that too! Sez Victah

SAY HELLO here ?-SANTA CLAUS

Hey, speaking of snow, in Ste Anne de Bellevue today is their 5th annual
Santa Claus parade. Festivities start early with free hot chocolate and
candy canes and games for the kids. The parade starts at
4:00 p.m. Last year, there were over 16,000 people that came to the parade
and there are a lot of floats and marching bands that participated in the
Montreal parade. So, if you're still living in the Montreal area, and love
the excitement of a parade in a small town, come on down and check it out.
Brenda

P.S. It's snowing right now! That will add extra excitement to the parade

Map of Verdun

Has anyone have a problem clicking the 'Map of Verdun' ? I get sent to
the MSN Groups home page every time. No big deal except I'd like to see
if there has been many changes to Verdun's layout. There might be
expressways now. I bought a 1950 Shell oil road map from eBay, which
shows the city of Montreal as I knew it. I believe many of the city
street\ names have changed over there years. Many more named in french.

Diane Bogo

Does anyone remember a very pretty but sad girl named Diane Bogo. She
may have lived close to the 5th Avenue movie theater which was on
Wellington. I dated her once in the fifties, and then lost touch with
her. We must have been 14 or 15 at the time. I have thought about her
from time to time, hoping she would have had experienced a happy life.
Mystical how memories evolve.

TEST TUBES

Hi Les;
I remember the old tubes and the testers. I had a party at my place here
last year. There were a lot of young people here. So I took out an old tube
and asked if anyone knew what it was? Of course they didn't. So I had to
explain how some stores had these machines, especially pharmacies, where you
would bring your tubes to test them. They were in awe!!!!! I though it was
pretty funny.

 Ok....Who remembers...??? COME ON PEOPLE!!

Barry don't feel bad my father used to get me to scoop up the
horse manure off the street in front of our flat. He wanted fertilizer
for his tiny garden. Colossal embarrassment for this too cool 10 year
old.

Horses used to deliver everything in the forties: Ice, rag pick up,
milk, bread. My grandfather worked at the bakery stables on Reille
(sp?) Avenue, I think, between Bannantyne and Verdun.

Visit Back Home

Hello,

Well its time to visit back home, will be there this week-end,walk memory ;ane and visit relatives.Looking forward to th efast foods too.

                                         Gary Haynes

Xmas vacation

I am hoping i could get some advice from the V.C. members who are
familiar with Verdun and Montreal. I am thinking about spending
Christmas there and I cannot afford to stay at the major hotels. Are
there hotels or motels that are inexpensive by the week on the island
you could recommend? Maybe a web site or a name is all I am asking
for.

I plan to do some research on my father's family history so I may be
there for at least 3 weeks over Christmas. This journey will take me
eventually to Ireland, but first I want to spend some time at my
upbringing. We lived at 457 2nd Avenue for 15 years.

I'm sure it will bring a flood of memories back to me, just to walk
down the lane between 2nd Avenue and 1st Avenue. My entire adulthood
was spent at sea in the US merchant marine, and to this day when I
dream of ships, they always dock right outside my door on Second
Avenue.

It has been 44 years since my family left Verdun to live in
California. In 1970 I moved to Hawaii, and have been here ever since.

Anyway, if any member should be aware of a modest, non touristy B&B,
hotel, or a motel, I'd appreciate it very much.

Bill Cooper

Just Wanted To Share :-)

My Mom was born and raised in The Point. She died 10 years ago at the age of 53. :-(   I was going thru some of her old stuff I had in a box today and came across this poem that I thought might be nice to share. I know it's about The Point, but a lot of it can still be applied to we Verdunites. :-) And from what I've read I know many of you here also hung around The Point too. By the way hehe excuse the reference to "Verdun Bums" LOL!
Unfortunately there was no author written on this so I don't know who wrote it.
Luv, Sharon *

THIS IS THE "POINT" THAT WAS
First of all, the friendships that
to this day still endure
Irv's and Rainbow's corner stores
A way of life for sure

Bonfires and processions
that were the best in town
West-end gangs and Verdun Bums
who tried to bring us down

Run Sheep Run and Kick the Can
Skipping rope and fun
Renting bikes and lining up for
Hogan's Bath in the sun

Talent shows at CKVL
Searching for new stars
79th Battery and Dom Polski Halls
and all the corner bars

Chocolate milk in Lorne School
St. Gabriel's Parish Hall
Colombia House and Reverend Brown
My God, we had it all

Tassee's and the good old "Pav"
Y dances Tuesday night
Northern Electric and CNR
The occasional gang fight

Grand Trunk Boat and Yacht Club
The Boardwalk and Nun's farm
The pool hall and CNR picnic
The dump with all it's charm

The "Gumper" and Muir's meat pies
Ice boxes and coal bins
Kik and Jumbo soda pop
and Saturday night "Bath-in's"

Snow forts and fire hydrant showers
The Vogue and Center too
Skating at the Ryde Street rink
and mignight mass 'til two

The zoot-suiters and their finery
The bookie and his bets
The Boys and Girls Club opening
Bob Gearey's Alouettes

The Point St. Charles football team
Played all their games with zest
They were rough and tough and handsome
No doubt, they were the best

I guess what was important
as we all grew up down there
Was the sense of being equal
When ALL our cupboards were bare

But pity those unfortunates
Who never knew the pride
of the kind of family feeling
We all still have inside

No matter where you travel

Verdun newspapers

Is there a paper publish in Verdun about Verdun? Seems to me there used
to be one.
Also, when I lived in Verdun the mayor had a flat on Woodland Avenue
(?) I think. The entrance had two lampposts on either side. Maybe I'm
posting too much already. I'll slow down some.

Class photos

Any Verdunite with a Verdun High year book from the 50s and 60s, please
check out the 'great' class photo web sites in LINKS, and please posts
your collections. Unfortunately, I did not saved one V.H. picture.
What a shame!

Halloween

Halloween was a trip in the 40s and 50s. Us preteens used to knock on
doors, and when the occupant answered, we'd all sing together, "charity
please". We'd go home after a night of roaming the streets, with more
candy than God intended for one human being.
I still connect the great voice of Fats Domino singing 'My Blue Heaven'
with October 31st for some forgotten reason.

Broom ball

I remember our city's favorite sport in the early 60s:

'On the ice in zero weather, falling down drunk, while our young
beautiful wives hated our guts, broom ball'.

Good fun for the early twenty-something crowd. It would probably kill
me today however.

The Great Antonio

Hi everybody,  I wonder how many of you remember the Great Antonio always pulling buses at the Atwater bus station. He died this past week. I think he lived in Verdun at one time when I was a kid on Ethel Street. He pulled four buses full of people down St.Catherine and wresled fourty people at the same time and won. Was on Johnny Carson. He was quite the caracter. There are articals on the net about him.  Dannyb

General : Remembering Verdun

Les the photo is very clear but I cannot make heads or tails of it.
There were no expressways when I grew up.
Where in the photo is Second Avenue for instance.

New Topic Some May Not Like... Comments please!

Ok, I've been reluctant to broach this subject, but seeing as we seem to need a new topic, here's one that might generate a few posts...

Before I continue, let me say that I love Verdun, I was born, raised and lived there for 43 years before coming to Virginia just this past August. I watched Verdun change a lot over the years, people. Just as I am sure that those of you who remain there have as well. All these memories that we've rekindled in the recent past in this group have been wonderful for me, as they help me to remember the Verdun that once was. BUT...it is no longer that Verdun anymore, I am afraid. For instance:
For several years before I left I would sit on my balcony and watch the going's on and could pinpoint to you who and where in my neighborhood there were drugs being sold. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is at least one drug dealer on any given block now. I lived with my sister for almost a year before I left, she lived on Lasalle Blvd. at the corner of Hickson. There are prostitutes frequenting the area, believe it or not. I remember one instance when I was with my 7 year old daughter and we were waiting for the streetlight to change....a prostitute happened to come up and stand beside us. Well, my little girl took one look at this chick and said to me "Mommy! That lady looks "different"?!"THAT is how obvious it was, I just thank God that my daughter didn't realize why the woman was dressed the way she was. A gentleman to my right and I just looked at each other, shook our heads and raised our eyebrows. ANOTHER time I was taking my morning speed walk at 6:30 a.m., here I was dressed in a sweat-suit with my hair just thrown in a pony-tail speed walking along Wellington, and near the corner of Woodland some guy pulls up in a car and rolls along beside me and was saying something to me...When I finally understood what he was saying I almost kicked him in the face...He was saying " ARE YOU WORKING NOW?" I was so shocked that all I could yell at him was "EXCUSE ME??????" to which he replied "Oh, I guess not." and tore off.
The "Rock Machine" who are the "little" Hell's Angels control Verdun's drug trade now and there have been shootings right on the street and I even remember a bomb going off in Verdun a few years back relating to it all. I read The Gazette online every morning and yesterday there was an ending to some of the Hell's Angel's mega-trial for murders etc and once again Verdun was mentioned with a not so nice face...here are some excerpts from the column this morning:

*Pierre Provencher, 54 (Rocker): According to court testimony, Provencher was among a group of Rockers who were supposed to gain control of drug turf in Verdun during the late 1990s. The Rock Machine was already well-established in the area, and the battle for Verdun became a focal point in the biker-gang war

*Patrick Turcotte, 24, killed May 1, 2000: The Rock Machine associate was shot several times while walking in Verdun.

Yes, I am not so blind to not realize that this isn't going on in Verdun but in a lot of places today. But hell, you know and I know that Verdun was NOT like this when we were kids. And Verdun still IS a place where a lot of children are still raised and still play on the streets, only they aren't the same streets anymore and it's a very scary thing when you think about it.  I know it's not easy for the law to get control of it either, but hell something needs to be done if we want today's generation of Verdun kids to have the same kind of wonderful memories as we all do, ya know? Maybe all the citizens of Verdun should take a "zero-tolerance" attitude and take it upon themselves to drive out all the trouble. yeah...siiiiigh...I know it's just stupid fanatasy that's easier said than done, but it's just that I'm so disillusioned with it all. It makes me so sad and afraid of what could happen if it gets even worse than it already has.
Comments anyone?
Luv, Sharon

Loss for words.

Hi everybody,  It has been a while since there has been no activity
here on connections all day long. I had nothing to read. Played with my new web cam all day. I think someone has to come up with a new subject to keep us all going. Imagine people from Verdun with nothing to say. Sounds weird doesn't it.  Dannyb--

Does anyone remember the Vogue Theatre? It only cost .25 cents to get in and it the best horror movies. I think it was on Charelevois.

Pics!...and ahem Bill? hehe

I just added some new pics of some of the beautiful sights here in Va. I couldn't find any from when we went along Skyline Drive in the fall, but there is one of the back of our house just as the leaves started changing. I got a few of Shenandoah Valley on Skyline drive with my son and daughter tho :-). There's a pic of a gorgeous sunrise that I took from the barn and another of a DOUBLE rainbow, and of a family of deer that frequents the field across from our house too.
I removed several of the ones that I'd previously posted, Mag, so that I didn't take up too much storage space.
Again, they're in "Life on the Farm in Virginia".

Ahem BILL! I ALSO noticed some new pics from YOU! What's THIS? You went on a Hawaiian retret and you were the ONLY man there with TWENTY-FIVE women???? Oh DO TELL! LOL
Cute kid you were too. :-)

Reid's Pet Shop?

Remember Reid's Pet Shop on Wellington between Melrose and Argyle? I love animals and would always stop in there whenever I'd go by, just to see what new animals they'd acquired and to pet the kittens and puppies and bunnies. Also to see the wonderfully bright parrots that they had many of too. Mr Reid never shooed us kids out, he'd actually encourage us to pet all the animals and play with the birds, even taking the guinea pigs out of the cages so we could hold them. I think he trained all his parrots himself, and man, could they TALK! hehe One time he had this squirrel monkey in, and I got close up to the cage to talk to him and the little bugger grabbed a handful of my long hair and wouldn't let go. Mr. Reid jokingly told me that he guessed he'd have to cut my hair off to get me loose and man...lol...I just YANKED with everything I had and got MYSELF loose thank you very much! hehe
Ahhhhhhh all these memories!!
Luv, Sharon

Dionne's Anyone? LOL

Who remembers the grocery store on Verdun Ave between 6th and Desmarchais (might have been a Steinberg's at one time I think?) but at one point it was a grocery chain called Dionne's, where you had to grab a black crayon as you went in cuz there were no prices on any of the food just on tags above the food and you were supposed to mark the price on yourself? LOL Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuure most of the people wrote the RIGHT price.....suuuuuuuuuuuure they did hehehe
The place is now an IGA...prices already put on for ya! :-D
Luv, Sharon

Barry's Fish and Chips, Anyone? :-D

Ok....anyone remember/know of Barry's Fish and Chips joint that was on Verdun Ave. between Argyle and Woodland? A LOT of people from VHS went there for lunch to get "dippy dogs" and fries and/or burgers for lunch. And a LOT of Catholic folks went there for their fish on Fridays...
Did anyone know Barry personally like my ex-husband did? heh heh heh...you wouldn't BELIEVE some of the things that went on there after hours man...
Luv, Sharon

More Memories....

Is it just me, or do you believe that we really DID have more snow when we were kids than they do now? Geeeeeeez....I can remember jumping off of 2nd story balconies into the snow below! Anyone remember that snowstorm we got in hmmmmm....I guess it was late 60's early 70's where we got slammed with like 3 FEET of snow and the snow covered the cars parked on the street....cops were out on SNOWMOBILES helping people who were stranded? Oh man....talk about some GREAT snowforts that year...not to mention great $$ that was made shovelling walkways and digging out cars!
How about the parking lot behind Steinberg's on Willibrord and Wellington in the winter? They'd have really high piles of snow around the whole back of the parking lot from clearing the lot, and they were great for walking along the top of....for sledding down once the store was closed at night and on Sundays (Not open Sundays then!), you could build some great forts at the side of them too but you had to be careful, cuz those hills were really high like I said and you didn't want all that much snow capable of falling down on you and killing you if it collapsed and you were in the fort! LOL
That same parking lot was great to play in in the summer too cuz the back of the store was one large brick wall and was used for SO many things! I remember writing and drawing all over that wall with chalk (GASP! I was a VANDAL at 7 years old! hehe),  Any of you girls my age remember playing a game against brick walls where you'd slip one of those red and blue spongy/bouncy balls with the white strip into the leg of an old pair of stockings or leotards (OH GOD! Remember those freaking LEOTARDS??? LOL!) and you'd knot the ball in the toe end, you'd stand with your back flat against the wall and your legs apart with the loose stocking end in your hand. Then you would swing that ball from side to side, over your head, between your legs and recite a verse....damn I wish I could remember just ONE of those verses hehe. Any of the girls here remember any of them? Or the boys even? hehe
That same wall also had a ledge about 2 or 3 feet up from the ground that we'd play a game with a ball on too...you had to throw the ball "just right" and it would hit that ledge and POP up into the air. I think whoever got the most pops in like 20 throws won or something.
Am I remembering correctly? Didn't part of the lane that runs parallel with
Willibrord and First Ave. between Lasalle Blvd. and Wellington St. wasn't it still made of cobblestone instead of asphalt? This would be in the middle 60's when I was really young...anyone else remember that by any chance?
Oh I'm on a ROLL here! LOL!
How about the "witches house" on what street...ummmm....Rielle or Gordon? It was this old creepy looking house that was set way back from the street and scared the bejesus out of us kids hehe.
Did anyone ever go to Therrien Park? They used to have these little sort of playhouses made out of cement that was aways from the playground itself. I was disappointed when my oldest was a little girl and I took her there to show her where Mommy used to play, and those little houses weren't there anymore..
Who remembers those white milk bottle candies? Man I loved them so much! Or the little maple sugar topped ice cream cones with maple syrup in the cone?
You all must remember when the "original" Rex Pizza was on Wellington between 3rd and 4th? My Mom used to send me every Friday to get steamies and fries for all of us. Well, get this....I went to where the original owner of Rex had moved and called the place Nick's Pizza, it's on Wellington down just past Hickson. Well, I walked in the door and there was Nick sitting there behind the cash and he remembered me! I couldn't believe it! And I didn't goad him with info either, he turned around to me and said "You used to come to my old place every Friday and get hot dogs and fries, didn't you?" It was amazing. And man...his pizza's and subs AND steamies all taste just like they used to too!
Ok...memory banks closing for the day, I'll let someone else make a deposit hehe.
Luv, Sharon

Is it just me....

At the risk of soundy picky (but I'm not really!) is it just me or does anyone else here find that the way MSN has formatted the way you retrieve new messages here sucks the big one or what? I mean, you can get around it by posting a "new discussion" but then you don't have a link to go to the message that was being replied to, know what I mean? I run 2 or 3 groups in Yahoo and I find that the way the group messages are formatted there are much more efficient, no offense.
Ever think about trying one in Yahoo?
Then again, maybe it's just cuz I am more accustomed to the workings of Yahoo groups....I don't know. What do ya think?

You can buy a VHS copy of the 'The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz'

Remembering Verdun

Ok....Who remembers...??? COME ON PEOPLE!!

Sharon, I lived just down 2nd Avenue from you at 457. We used to say
'across the street on the other side', but on the opposing corners at
that intersection (Verdun and 2nd), there was a laundromat, Campo's
(sp) meat market, restaurant and a triplex apartment building -- maybe.
Of course this was in the 50's.

A Question for those who left Verdun

This is a question for those of you who left Verdun and are now in other parts of the world.
I see many ex-Verdunites on this list who are now in the U.S. and one in Australia even! I myself am now in Virginia, and I'm interested in knowing how you came to end up in the U.S.
Anyone care to share?
My story is that 3 and a half years ago, I was in a Yahoo chatroom, and some gentleman from the U.S. messaged me. We began to chat and a friendly relationship ensued. After about 6 months we realized that something was developing between us that we couldn't deny LOL. It was hard tho...750 miles separated us, but we made plans to meet face to face and did not long after. To make a long story short, after a very long and difficult long-distance relationship that lasted 3 years, we were married finally 3 weeks ago and I am in the process of getting landed immigrant status.
So now this Verdunite is a cowgirl in Virginia hehe.
Who's NEXT to tell your story?!
Luv, Sharon

Indian Totem Poll

Hi Everbody,  Does anybody remember the Totem Poll Between the police station and 2nd ave. on Lasalle Blvd. It was in a yard that everybody cut through to go play in the park and on that old fire truck. I have always wondered what happened to it. It should have been protected and not moved or dystroyed. Now there is apartments there.   Dannyb--

Mag...About the Just Verdun Photo Album here!

Maggie...I was just checking out your "Just Verdun" photo album here. I saw the pic that you are wondering where it was taken. If nobody has guessed it can I take a stab at it? I hope you don't mind, but I downloaded the pic and lightened it to see better cuz it was bugging that I was sure I knew where it was but I had to see. Isnt that the lane that runs parallel between 4th and 5th avenue and that's the back of the French church that's on Verdun Ave between those same streets?
Also....you know that building that's on Lasalle Blvd. with all that beautiful woodwork? It's between Willibrord and Rielle not Rielle and Gordon. It's just 2 or 3 buildings down from where you used to live matter of fact. I know that for sure cuz I watched that couple work on that building by HAND for almost 2 years, slowly but surely removing all those years and layers of old paint and sanding it down with love till it was it's original woodwork. It was totally amazing to watch the transformation, not to mention see how beautiful it turned out. :-)
It was too much to see your pic of the coner of Lasalle Blvd. and Willibrord too...my grandmother AND my Uncle Ronnie's house show in that pic! You babysit for my Uncle Ronnie a few times didn't you? Or was that Tina or Sandy?
That album is great Mag...just as the rest of them are...talk about memories!
Let me know if you think I'm right about that back lane pic, ok?
Luv, Sharon

Ok....Who remembers...??? COME ON PEOPLE!!

Hey! I don't wanna hog the message board here, give me a hand you guys!
Who remembers some of my fav things about growing up in Verdun, like:

That wooden GREEN THING...the toboggan slide near the river behind where Therrien Pool is now? Man....me and my pals spent HOURS there on winter weekends! ESPECIALLY after we had freezing rain and the slide was slick with ice....you'd FLY! You had to go up this wooden ramp that had wooden slats nailed down for rungs, there was a guy in a small booth waiting at the top, there were places (runs/tracks) for 3 toboggans if I remember right, you'd put your toboggan down up against this metal hook that held your sled in place and when the guy said GO and dropped the hooks down your toboggan would would fly down the ramp. It was pretty high and you went for a long time too...get to the bottom and climb that ramp over and over again...we had a BLAST!

I used to ice skate at Willibrord park. At that time I lived at the corner of 2nd and Verdun so I'd just put my skates on at home and walk to the rink! LOL Anyone else?

I can't remember what store it was, but I remember we used to be able to buy the potato chip CRUMBS in small wax paper packets for 5 cents! And they tasted even BETTER than the regular chips too.

When I was really young we'd go to Richard Park, the one behind the police & fire station on the boardwalk? Anyone remember when they used to have a REAL old fire station for the kids to PLAY on in that park? And they used to have summer programs where you could sit in the park with "monitors" and you could do arts and crafts or play games and they even had STILTS that the kids could use...they were MY favorite thing! And the pool there was a pretty good one for a kids wading pool too. That park was so popular that there was a crossing guard at the corner of Willibrord and Lasalle Blvd. for years just to cross the kids going to that park. Gone are those days man...it's so sad. The government cut funding for those kinds of park programs years ago, and as a matter of fact, that PARK has now been taken apart and CONDOS are in it's place. They have built a new really fancy and neat kids playground further down the boardwalk now tho near 5th or 6th Ave. I guess to make up for it.

What else...hmmmm...

How about the RESTAURANT that used to be on the boardwalk right behind the big apartment building near 1st Avenue, not far from that same park I mentioned? I can just barely remember my uncle buying me hot dogs there. It was just a snack bar sorta place...
There's a fairly new restaurant down where the old Boat Club used to be now. A real fancy place with prices to match. Good food tho I must say, my sis took me there for my birthday last year. :-)

And who remembers when there were all KINDS of docks down by the river for the boats? We used to walk all up and down them and even sit down and dangle our feet into the river on hot days.

Ok....My memory bank is starting to get overdrawn here hehe....surely somebody ELSE remembers these things and can remind us of even more? Remembering your growing up years is a blast, man!
Come on PEOPLE! :-)
Luv, Sharon

For Jo Geraldi

OMG JOANNE! How the hell are ya, girl! It HAS been a VERY long time! Oh man this is SO great to hear from you! hehe I'm in my glory...all these people from my past!  Think maybe we can recapture our youth? hehe You're still in Verdun or what?
Yes, I had run into Karen several times too in Verdun. She has like what...FIVE girls and a boy now? And she ended up with Steve Carrier didn't she? God I remember all those nights spent in the 2nd Ave. restaurant LOL. Those were some fun times. remember the statue at city hall Jo? hehehe Right across from your house, you had to be careful. LOL And yeahhhhhhhhhhh what's Danny talking about anyway huh? hehe The Geraldi's WERE/ARE good people, man!
Your Mom was a riot and a half Jo, I was very sad to hear of her passing awhile ago. My own mother died 10 years ago, only 53. Not a time in my life that I want to remember, it was very hard to see her leaving me a little more every day and there was nothing I could do to stop it. It affected me deeply, I got into drugs after to numb the pain but then I believe that my Mom threw me a big slap in the head from heaven and sent me my youngest daughter Allison. Alli was not "supposed" to be...lol...I was taking the Pill. To this day I truly believe that my getting pregnant despite precautions was my mother's way of smartening me up cuz she knew I would quit everything cold turkey if I found out I was with child. And I did of course.
I have three kids altogether, Jo. My oldest girl, Fawn is now almost 21, my son Justin is almost 16 and Alli is 7. Yes....lol...OOOPS! I affectionately call her my Alli ooops  hehe. But what a beautiful oops she is.
Fawn and Justin decided to stay in Montreal with their Dad.  It isn't easy but we know we can handle it. They were here 3 weeks ago for my wedding and will be here again at Xmas. We talk on the phone....email....letters...it works. They know that I am not "abandoning" them, and actually it was THEY who convinced me to move to Virginia. I wasn't going to do it, didn't want to leave them and a piece of my heart behind, but they told me that I need to be hapopy for a change. They love their new step-Dad and they know how much he loves me. They never saw that with their bio-Dad and I, unfortunately. The marriage was over for a long time already before I finally couldn't take it anymore.
Anyway.....yada yada yada...here I go on again hehe some things DON'T change hehe.
Jo...it is SO great to hear from you! Yes we MUST keep in touch for sure! And I would LOVE to see pics of your kids and YOU.
I just realized that Debbie told me that her email to me came back, so it must be cuz I haven't used hotmail in a long time. I use Yahoo most of the time, I find it more convenient, but then again maybe I'm just biased cuz I met Rick in a chatroom there lol.
You can email me at hotat40_1999@yahoo.com (NO COMMENTS! LOL)
I look forward to catching up with you, girl!
Stay Sweet!
Luv, Sharon

For Debbie

Hi Debbie! So it IS you! hehe
Man....that aquarium will stay with me for the rest of my life! I was so in awe of it.
Ok....I lived on Gervais street VERY briefly too. God it was all just a new develpoment then, wasn't it? I think there was even like a mini-forest across the street. Anyway, I had red curly hair and freckles (STILL do!) and I lived with my Mom and her boyfriend in a small basement flat down the street from you! Oh man....I was TEN then, that was THIRTY-FOUR YEARS AGO do you realize that? Shit....I'm feeling old now LOL.
I went to Keith School for about 6 months I think....I had almost forgotten about that! I LOVED Keith School and the new concept it had about letting the KIDS pick which subjects they wanted to take hehe. Didn't you go there too?
Do you remember me yet?
Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of me from then either...we had a fire at our house we moved to after Gervais St. and all old photos were lost :-( Do you have any pics of YOU? You were blonde weren't you?
Great to hear from ya!
Luv, Sharon

Postscript: It was so nice to chat with you this afternoon, Debbie! I'm still looking for that pic of me when I was younger but no luck so far I'm afraid.

For Danny B

Hi Danny!
Say Hi to Dodo for me! I'm sure she'll remember me. I used to be afraid of her, so I was really nice and polite! hehe
Wow....20 years? That's fantastic, Danny, not too many people these days that can say that, especially not our age anyway.
And well...it wasn't really Kevin that I hung around with, it was more Karen...and they were bro and sis...TWINS to boot, so I saw him a lot. Had a HUGE crush on him when he was younger. Karen used to get mad sometimes cuz I'd go over to their house on 4th Ave. to hang around and she'd be talking at me but I didn't hear her cuz I was swooning over Kevin! LOL
Do you remember when Kevin went thru the "Bruce Lee" stage? hehe
I'm not sure, but I think I kissed him once too...but maybe that was just a dream.  Trust me....things changed as HE changed too, if ya know what I mean.
Do you know the MacLean's and the Robert's brother's too? And how about Jean and Yvon Dumichel (sp?).
Wow....this is great to hear from you Danny, thanks for replying to me! Tell Dodo to get in on this group too!
Take care.
Luv, Sharon

For Sharon Mugford

To the moderators of this group...sorry for the following double posts that I am about to put here, but I wanted to be sure that the person's in question got my replies, ok? I'm sure that you understand.

Hi Sharon!!
It's great to hear from ya! We never really hung around together or knew each other well, but I can still remember your face.
And, as I said, the fact that you were one of the four Sharon's hehe.
I'm still in Virginia. Will most likely be for many years to come. My hubby would like to retire to Canada in 15 years tho so we might just end up back there. Probably not Montreal tho, as Rick doesn't speak any French of course. Probably end up somewhere in Ontario.
I am now a true cowgirl! hehe I live on a cattle farm in the Shenandoah Valley with the Blue Ridge Mountains all around me. It's so beautiful. Quite the difference from the hustle and bustle of Montreal LOL! Who'd have ever thought that I'd end up here huh?
Certainly not I. But love makes you do many things that you never thought you would.
One of my friends is forever teasing me by singing that old theme song from the old "Green Acres" TV show hehe.
The pic I posted here is kinda dark I realized...lol...sorry about that. But before I could fix it or add a better one yesterday, we had a storm that downed a power line so we lost power till this AM and I couldn't fix the pic. But I will do that soon and add some more too.
Thanks for replying to me! I LOVE getting in touch with people from my past! This IS a wonderful thing the Internet, isn't it? I actually met my hubby on the Net too! hehe
Love, Sharon
P.S. In case you didn't see my previous post, Sharon...I asked you if you used to hang around with Lesley Stuart?

OOOOPS!

I just realized that when I started my intial hello here that I didn't start a "new discussion" and instead it was answered as a reply to an old post..so it might get lost in the shuffle.
I really did reply to all of you who answered me, it's just under the "Looking For: Hello "message strain. If you can't find my replies to you please let me know and I'll find them and re-post them ok?
Let me know!
Luv, Sharon

Pics

Rather than fill up the photo section with pics, at the risk of sounding vain hehe I will just put up a recent one that was taken at our wedding on August 8th and also put a link to my Yahoo Photo Album where you can see more, ok? The link is in the "Links" section here on the left (Duh! LOL)
Luv, Sharon

Green apples

Does anybody else remember the sour green apples that grew on a lot of trees in the back yards of the cottages on the avenues between bannantyne and champlain. It was a pass time of myself and a few friends to raid them at lunch hour from school. There was a few trees in the lane between Willibrord and Rielle behind Willibrord school in the AllyO laneway I'm sure that many of you remember that lane I think it was the only one in Verdun with a given name. It had a wild little hill that you could make your bike airborn if you went fast enough.Nearly got my butt kicked good a few times just for getting a apple,Verdun Style.  Dannyb--

Hot summer nights

Hi everybody,  How many of you people that left Verdun remember those hot humid nights that there was not even enough of a breeze to blow out a match, well that how hot this whole summer has been so far. When I was a kid we would build a tent on our galleries and pray that it would rain during the night.I guess a lot of you did the same thing. You could joke with your buddies across the lane or street all night or until your parents would yell to shut up.Any other ways to beat those hot nights that you remember.  Dannyb--

Thirties, Forties and Fifties.

When I click on 'REPLY' or 'REPLY TO MY INBOX' I am sent to the
following site.

http://groups.msn.com/home

Which is not Verdun Connections unfortunately, but the MSN home page.

What growing up in the great city of Verdun has blessed me with, is
patience, which has come greatly appreciated in the cyber age of
computers.
Have a wonderful day,

The Recipe for Spruce Beer

Thought you might be interested................
5 gal. of pure water
3-6 lbs of unsulphured molasses
1 pkg. of yeast
1 qt. Sitka or white spruce needles or tips
Boil about one gallon of water for at least 30 minutes, then steep the needles or tips for about half an hour. Drain out the needles and add 3-6 lbs. of unsulphured molasses to the spruce-flavo

red water, depending on taste. (Optional: Adding 3 lbs. of Blue Ribbon hop-flavored malt at this point will improve the taste but is not part of the original recipe.) Add water to make 5 gallons. Cool the mixture to about 70째 F. and add yeast. Keep the mixture at about 70째 for several days, then move it to a cooler spot (about 50째) until fermentation stops. The process will take 10-14 days, sometimes longer. When fermentation ceases, the beer is ready to bottle or drink, but will improve if it is allowed to age in the bottle.

NOTE: The alcohol content varies between 6 and 9 percent, depending on the amount of molasses.

Deleting Messages???

Why would anybody want to delete
their messages and responses. It leaves gaps in the history
for anybody new to the group or anybody just reading and catching up on what members have been discussing. Is it just me or does anybody else find it leaves gaps. And it doesn't feel right that you respond to a subject and the person who wrote it deletes it and leaves you believing that they have no interest in that subject.
